
If you have some AC5 left what you can do is take of the VGA cooler, clean GPU and the mems, put some AC5 and set the cooler back. The factory paste is not that good as the AC5, you should get 10~°c less of temp.Thanks for the suggestions guys...for reference, this is the GPU I'm running on:

It looked fairly sturdy and reviews seemed good..didn't think I would need to use any sort of aftermarket cooling...and I had this card for less than 2 months (had to replace a dying 6850 than ran out of warranty/RMA benefits...) so I don't *think* it's a hardware defect. For what it's worth, this is the only game that comes close to getting dangerously high temperatures.
As for whoever mentioned hot CPU temps, I'm using a CM Hyper 212+ with artic silver 5 as my thermal paste. It's been pretty reliable so far and I believe you can get that heatsink fairly cheap nowadays with the Evo taking over as the main budget-line-product (I think).
