The only reason this works for crystals is because there are so few of them. There's thirty-eight bajillion different crafting materials. At that point, just ask for more inventory. No reason to limit yourself to "crafting mats" only.

Making it crafting mats only provides two really huge benefits:
1) All the game needs to know is how many we have. All the other information items can have is eliminated. Space for all 2651 crafting mats isn't like space for 2651 items. It's probably closer to space for maybe a hundred to two hundred items or so. Items that would take more than 15 retainers to hold could be condensed down to around the size of just one of them or less. The way it's done now, using up an entire item slot just for a stack of materials, is far too wasteful for a game that's short on space.
2) We could get a clean interface that organizes them by type so that we can find them. No more jumping around from one random retainer to another and another to collect our materials. Every mat would be where it always goes, and where the interface says it will be. So the player experience of it is vastly improved.
Between them (or really with either one of them), they seem like plenty of reason to me.
