[Dev Suggestion] About Male Viera

Yoshi P mentioned being worried about how the dev team was worried about how the community might take it if they release male Viera.
well there are 2 things that can be done here.
1. you could do an art contest and have the players give their artistic ideas of how they look.
or 2. you could just make them yourselves as you are developers in the FF series.



personally I would love to see a design contest but overall FF XIV being the first to actually show Male Viera would be really cool either way.

Which would be understandable. Making a race is a lot of work. They have to take every piece of old gear into account and morphs.

tbh genderlock races would be a issue if their was no gender lock cloths at all

i mean id make a male ronso due 2 lock however i wont because genderlock on cloths or i would make one wearing spring dress

Lets take the closest race/gender combo to male Viera. Male catboys. Fourth most active race/gender combo, third most created. Obvious interest in the human-boys-with-animal-ears already from that stat but lets make some comparisons. To be fair lets be pessimistic and say male Viera will only be half as played as male miqote since they're competing with them for animal-ear-boy you've got a number of 29.9k.

Least played gender/race option is FemRoe. Apparently worth the resources to add. 7.1k active players. less than a fourth of our hypothetical number... It doesn't look like "Number for it to be worth it" is much of an argument against it.

Though times were definitely different then, they had years to work on revamping the game and already had the ungenderlocked model, and maybe they think it was a mistake and wish they had created more genderlocked races instead.

So lets compare it to some hypothetical hrothgar numbers. Lets say Hrothgar does extremely well. And I really hope they do. And they become more popular than their closest race, Roes, both genders included. Thats 23.4k thats still less than a hypothetical half-the-catboy-population male Viera...

Alright but maybe this hypothetical is a stupid one. Hrothgars are like roes body type wise and male Viera would probably be like Elezen. So lets compare male Roes to male elezen in play numbers... Male elezen beat male roes by 4k active players. Obviously I removed the ludicrously optimistic Hrothgar prediction for this one, but you get my point.

Ah! but male Viera aren't an iconic fantasy race like elves. They're elves with things on their heads. So maybe we should use Au Ra male numbers... But those are even higher, coming out at 36k, more than the entire roe race again.

If we do the pessemistic 1/2 split for male Au Ra they don't quite make the cut of being more popular than the optimistic "entire Roe race" but are still more popular than male roes by 2.5k. And I definitely think male roes were worth the time to be made playable!

Not that I don't get it, marketing "Two new races!" is fantastic, and people have wanted a more "beast" like race for years. I'm super excited for Hrothgar. But if they were worth it then by the numbers game Male Viera definitely were.

People are getting the wrong idea. It isn't up to us to create Viera; A pre-existing race with lore and all. FFXIV just simply implemented what they know already AKA Fran and the other females that are shown.

For it to be a contest seems disrespectful to Matsuno. We already know a rough layout of what the Viera's are, how they behave and how they live. Even with the male we know a lot just not what they look like. It only seems appropriate to let him create the male counterpart in his image.

This isn't the sort of thing that companies would outsource to an art contest for fans.

They do their occasional contests to design one costume, or one piece of furniture, that will go into the game alongside many others - but designing an entire race is on a completely different level to that.
