Gearing up to i380 isn't hard as such. Just tedious and/or expensive.

Judging from the early parts of Stormblood and Heavensward, I expect the first ShB dungeon to drop i390 or i400 gear - depending on what level the dungeon is.
I also expect the early quests in ShB to give us i385 gear before we end up in any dungeon, so better gear than that will certainly not be needed going into ShB.

If they won't add an ilev requirement, then the first dungeon will be ilevel 1 But fun aside, it will drop 390 for sure, because Sirensong dropped 260 items (like 260 shire gear) if they do the same formula in Stormblood.

380 is decent. Might get you to the 1st dungeon before you start replacing.

390 is good. Might get you to the 2nd.

400 will get you to about lvl 76 until you need to start replacing.

You know, unless you're one of those people who think it's ok to keep the same gear the whole leveling process. Don't be one of those people.

Veteran healers don't care if we need to heal, but right now we don't. We want interesting things to do during the downtime other than a 30s dot and a single filler spell that hasn't changed from lvl 4 to lvl 90.
Dead DPS do no DPS. Raised DPS do 25/50% lower DPS. Do the mechanics and don't stand in bad stuff.
Other games expect basic competence, FFXIV is pleasantly surprised by it. Other games have toxic elitism. FFXIV has toxic casualism.[/LIST]

If they keep to the same pattern as before, the first dungeon will be at level 71 and drop i390 gear, the second at level 73 and drop i400 gear.
New crafted gear (which will be obtainable as quest rewards) will be i385 for level 70, i395 for level 72, and i405 at level 74, which will be the earliest that you can get anything better than the top-tier Stormblood gear.

It won't be. The tome gear that gets moved to hunt seals are when the current expansion uncapped tomes are deprecated for current expansion new tomes. The 360 gear will likely switch to Poetics when Shadowbringers launches assuming the devs continue with the decision that Poetics will remain the "old" content tomestone.

I cant talk for others, but I just came back to the game about two weeks ago, after being away over a year. My highest gear was i320. I was basically BIS (for armor) until the savage Omega came out. The toxicity of the high end raiding community was part of why I quit the game.

Now I'm back and will just stick to regular casual content (dungeon, alliance raids, MAYBE normal mode raids) but I'm definitvely not killing myself doing weekly targets of any kind to grind best gear possible. If any content demands me need such an investment on gear, that's the end of my subscription again and for good.

I do already have a couple Genesis pieces, though, but I rather work on leveling other jobs than grinding gear that will become obsolete in a couple months.

TLDR: casual players, returning players, and casual returning players.

Not really. I did it on WHM and took out all three swords after DoTs > 2~3 Stone IVs and Assize (which only hit two of them)—I didn’t have to use Cleric Stance or PoM. I’m i399 on my healers, but it definitely wasn’t difficult to burn them down quickly.

For people that are concerned about gear grinds—you don’t have to do much grinding, really. Just run Expert Roulette once a day every day, and that will give you 90 * 7 = 630 Genesis (they’ve raised the cap for it to 900).

You can also do Orbonne Monestary to try and get a piece of gear from it. Running all three 24-mans give you tokens to trade in for upgrade pieces for left and right side, so you can get easy i400 gear. The weapon upgrade will probably be added soon, too (I don’t think they added it this last patch... can’t remember).

You should still have semi-up-to-date gear even in “casual” content. Simply because, if you’re too low, you may not meet the item level and you may be a hinderance to your group if you’re on a tank or healer role. No need for unnecessary struggle. You don’t need full i400 Savage BiS, but I think everyone should at least aim for i390 before the expansion ends. That way you can go into Shadowbringers and not have to worry about gear upgrades for a couple levels (and, if you’re leveling DNC/GUN, you can have gear set aside for them when they hit level 70, which is always nice).

I think I was just over 390, around 392 (or maybe 394?). I used Aero 2 and Aero 3 on one sword while I Stone IV'd the other swords. By the time killed the other swords, the dots almost took out a sword by themselves. I didn't even use Assize since it was on CD the entire time. I think the duty gauge was around 70+ but def not 90 or anything. I can see this being tough with lower ilevels, but if people can get through Ghimlyt I don't think this dps check is that hard.

If you have good enough gear to even enter Orbonne Monastery (i365 required) then you already have good enough gear to finish the MSQ, as well as good enough gear to enter all other non-Extreme/non-Savage content in the game.
In other words, if you can run Orbonne Monastery then you no longer need to grind for gear unless you really want to do the hardcore content.

Extrem is not hardcore. Savage is but ex is just normal with more Bosslifepool and damage and less telegraphing. For exemaple Snekboi is the easiest Ex-Encounter in Stormblood and can be done with 380 gear.

    @Ogulbuk
Killing yourself ? Wow, a little bit dramatic? You can with close to no effort obtain tomestones (red, yellow or genesis). The current MSQ is way easier then Ala Mhigo MSQ. And when you think that "grinding gear that will become obsolete in a couple months" then you played through FF14 already. no offense just my thoughts.
