Game locks up computer, requiring reset

I'm generally pretty bad at these sorts of things.

For the past several months FFXIV has been crashing my computer pretty hard by suddenly and without warning dropping down to about a single frame every several seconds(usually about one or two frames per 7-10 seconds) and then getting worse as it hangs, requiring a hard reset of the computer to fix. Alt tabbing out to try and close the game through task manager does nothing to help as it affects the entire computer with CPU usage at 100%, and not just the client/application. I've tried to let it sit before just to see what would happen, and only one time did it finally fix itself by just flat out crashing and rebooting the video drivers after about ten minutes.

I would usually get these about once per day, but since 4.56 dropped, I've had about four in two hours of play time, and it's making getting anything done relatively difficult, not to mention inconvenient for party members when trying to do group content.

Good afternoon and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

You mentioned this has been happening for a few months, do you recall when it started happening? Can you remember if anything changed/updated on your PC that coincides with this?

What have you attempted so far to alleviate the issue?

You mentioned that the CPU is at 100% usage when you pull up the task manager. Is it XIV that is using all of it, or is it something else (or are you unable to see that at all)?

I would suggest trying a clean boot if you have not done so already. Simply open the task manager and select the 'Start up' tab. Disable everything here and restart the PC. This will make sure that no background processes are interfering with the game.

We hope we can be of assistance in helping you enjoy the exciting world of Final Fantasy XIV!

Hello! Sorry for taking a few days to get back to this.

Disabling everything at startup has not gained any results, nor has reinstalling the game. Reading around here a bit, I tried limiting the framerate to 60 while still running in DX11 and also updating my video drivers. The lockups are less frequent than they were right after 4.56 landed, but the last time I got one I let it sit and eventually it crashed itself with an 1100002 error(A Fatal DirectX has occurred.) rather than crashing the whole video driver, though I STILL had to restart my PC because everything else was hanging or generally unresponsive. The CPU showed random spikes of activity coming from different programs that shouldn't have had any meaningful effect on anything, such as some of the background/controller software for the Corsair keyboard. Crashes occur even when those processes are manually terminated before playing.

It feels meaningful to note that FFXIV is the ONLY game where this happens - I've had several all day long sessions with other recent releases and none of them cause any trouble, and certainly not to the point where a restart is required.

Update: Switching to dx9 after doing a clean reinstall seems to have solved the issue, which is not ideal but if it works, it works. Will update if it continues to cause trouble.

I've been having some similar issues and DX9 seemed to work for a bit - until it flat out crashed and freaked out my gpu and laptop for almost a whole 24 hours until I managed to remedy it. And as is it still only lets me play for a limited amount of time before DX9 dies too. And similarly, this is the only game or anything on my computer having problems.
I'm hoping it works for you of course, just, wanted to give you a heads up in case it isn't a solid fix (hopefully we both can have this remedied!)
