14 worlds?

The mother crystal made 14 worlds. Our own is the 14th.
If canonically all previous games are those worlds, and nothing else was made after, the ff15 world is from where, and how?

The 13th world was utterly destroyed. It is not the void the voidsent escape from into our world.

Some worlds are taken over by the darkness.
Some worlds are taken over by the light.

Given that at least some of these worlds are past final fantasy games, what ones do you think we messed up badly enough for them to have ended up in darkness?

None of these worlds are past FFs, and the world we play is the Source, the "prime" world of XIV.

Any references to other FFs exist strictly as XIV's own thing (aside from blatant cross-over events). If it's a regular part of the game, it's not the thing from another game.

Just a quick clarification. The 13 shards are NOT the worlds of the first 13 Final Fantasy games. The settings of those games are separate planets, most likely even universes, from Hydaelyn and the 13 shards. The shards are physical copies of the original 'Source' Hydaelyn upon which our characters reside on, and the only difference is that people and society evolved differently.

FF14 is not a continuation of or built in the same setting as any other FF game. The references to other games is purely an homage, not history. There is no connection between the other shards of Hydaelyn and other games.

Exactly, the '13 shards are the previous 13 FF games' was just a fan theory from ages ago that SE themselves debunked quickly, but some players still hold onto it.

The only Shard that were know of that has fallen entirelly to either the Light or Darkness was the Thirteenth, which became the Void (it completely fell to the Dark). The First hasn't yet completely fallen to the Light yet though, so that's why were off to it to save what's left (of course it's always possible that Elidibus has just been hiding the truth the whole time and others have also fallen).

But the important thing is each Shard is simply a copy of Hydaelyn in every way where things turned out differently in some aspects but the same as 'our' Hydaelyn in others. They're alternate realities, not totally different worlds.

Never mind that FFXIII's world was consumed by darknesschaos with all its residents trapped between life and death. It's basically the only world where that kind of comparison holds up, though. The only similarity between FF1 and the First is that both worlds have Elves and Dwarves by those names. (Keep a lookout for an Elf Prince with no given name and a dark elf named Astos...)
