I know that many people are throwing around wanting male Viera. I can't say that I'm not disappointed. However I feel that the issue is quite a bit deeper than simply wanting bunny boys and not wanting an over masculine race from left field that looks like someone slapped a bad Thundercat texture map on a Roe.
At a base level, we use our characters as a form or self expression. The reason why you have such a backlash at this moment is from the perception of people that cannot express themselves through a media that they love, which is this game. We do this content. We get our characters all this cool gear. We fight crazy battles and hang out with our friends with characters that have a little bit of us in them.
Guys like to be bunnies too. Girls like to be tough and buff. Sometimes, we just want to bounce to an alt to feel this for a little while, just to get out of our own skin and relax away from the rest of the world. This is why people get so passionate about male Viera.
Gender locking these two races basically says, in a day and age when transgender rights and gender is such a hotly debated topic, that males and females can't be x thing in this fantasy world that they have enjoyed and invested countless amounts of money into for x amount of years.
This even goes for clothes. Genderlocking anything at this point is potentially a damaging thing. Why does it still happen? Why are things still segregated by sexual characteristics? Is it so wrong for a man to display something feminine? A female something masculine? Aren't we moving beyond this binary way of thinking by now?
The message that genderlocking these races is sending to players is toxic and potentially anti LGBTQ even though it is not intentional. Even with lore that restricts a gender, we have both genders of all races in this game. It would be better to hold back on introducing a new race at launch to be able to introduce it with no gender locks then to gender lock the races and then decide on something later.
For some players. Including myself, the dysphoria of seeing a hyper masculine race and an overly sexual-looking female race with no counter balances really hurts and makes me feel uncomfortable. Give us some girly boys and some really buff, man-women. Counter balance these races. Give us more options to express ourselves. Please don't limit us.
