Male Viera and Female Hrothgar Fans: This expansion isn't going in a direction I'm comfortable with. I haven't really been enjoying the new content lately and a new race was the only thing I was looking forward to, but now I can't be the race AND gender I want so I think I won't play the new expansion.

Y'all monster: WOW, ENTITLED MUCH! Imagine quitting a game just because there's no new race gender. You probably never liked Final Fantasy. Not like me who eats everything this game offers and doesn't question anything. Why complain about this and not how bad Eureka was!? Either way I don't care about the gender lock, but my lack of opinion is just as valid as your opinion.

Since "they have to redesign EVERY piece of gear for m viera and f Hrothgar" keeps getting brought up:

Male viera use the elezen skeleton, that's it they don't have to work from scratch.
Miqos and female auras use the Hyur skeleton, Hrothgar the Roe skeleton which in itself is also the one used for Highlanders. Female Viera use the Ferm Elezen one.
They don't have to "redesign every piece of gear individually" the pieces are all here and have been used in this way since launch

Just because you aren't happy with only 1 gender for the race, doesn't mean we should scrap them.

You have no idea what they went through to add this race to the game. And just because you didn't get what you wanted, doesn't mean "let's just get rid of them until they add 2 genders."

Let's not forget that they said Au Ra were the last race, and surprise we got Viera and Ronso. Sure one gender for each race, but TWO new races.

You can whine and mope, but getting two new races is massive.

You didn't understand me. Maybe I am wrong, but I think that because you personally don't care about the gender-lock, you treat people with different expectations in a very pejorative way. You think that people would prefer to not get a Viera race at all instead of getting only one gender because they are selfish and want to punish these ones who don't mind (like 'I didn't get what I wanted, so everyone is obligated to suffer with me!'), but I've read a lot of posts and comments and for the most male Viera fans it just looks like an unfinished product (I would happily wait to get both genders in the next expansion than getting only one gender now. Please remember that they said AuRa is their last playable race, but they still decided to add more of them). This is the thing that is related to the trust I mentioned in my last post. We had a big problem with gender-locked races in the past and if the dev team starts to repeat their own mistakes because of the resources... it's not a good sign. Especially if they knew that they will disappoint the people who were asking for both Viera genders for many years. You really can't expect that players won't be worried. It's okay if you don't, but please don't treat us like selfish crybabies who just want to get what they want and don't care about anything.

Literally nobody as a problem with you leaving the game because you don't enjoy it anymore.

What people are criticizing are reactions like OP's who says they love the game but who will unsub simple because they didn't get their bunnyboys, while basically saying "I won't return until you add them in, which is a shame since I love the game".

I play video games for a variety of reasons, not just one. I fell in love with this game because it has a little bit of everything that I want. I can craft, compete on a marketboard, party with players to tackle dungeons, enjoy a story, follow my character through an interesting world, chat with regular faces in a free company, laugh at a stupid gentleman detective, go on treasure hunts, etc. The list goes on and on. Right away, they're not taking anything away from me in Shadowbringers. I just don't have as many options going forward as others have predicted there would be.

That all being said, I feel like this is a prime example of how a controversy can completely destroy a community in ways the controversy's original source could never even hope to.

People have the right to be disappointed because, let's face it, people have the right to feel any way about anything. In a perfect world scenario, those who are disappointed would leave a formal, mature, and calm complaint. Then, others would respond with something like "I'm sad to see you leave."

But nah. Instead, I'm watching any FFXIV-related parts of the internet completely explode. The toxicity is unreal.

I overall agree with you, but that being said, if I had my way, we wouldn't be getting any new races either. I would much rather focus on upgrading the races we currently have; goodness knows they could use the attention. But then again, my first MMO and the one I grew up with was FFXI, and to this very day they never added a new playable race from its initial launch, and we (mostly) never complained about it there, so this whole thing has been silly to me in the first place. :P

Just because it make look similar, doesn't necessarily mean they share a skeleton.

They have said that existing races do reuse skeletons, you can also see that Fran uses the Elezen skeleton just as omega F and M, also garlear use hyur and Elezen skeletons.
Hrothgar and viera will not get a unique skeleton and the gear is scaled via those skeletons, it's why gear looks (with the exception of the ears) the same on fem Auras and fem miqos for example.
We have Fran cutscenes, her skeleton is Elezen.
