This. It shouldn't make a difference. There was no precedent for this other than early issues that were already criticized and resolved. There was no good reason for them to add new genderlocked races, I'm sorry.
Females are also never supposed to leave the woods but they say "bye, i'm out" all the time, you really don't believe that there would not be males that say i'm tired of defending the wood and never seeing others and living what according to the lore is an incredibly harsh lifestyle. It's inconceivable that there would not be males that left.
I mean, Yoshi went out of his way to NOT confirm Male Viera at any point, so to deem it false advertising is, at the WORST, a stretch and at best a VERY big stretch.
When Roe and Miqote were gender-locked, the game had MUCH bigger problems to sort out first. Sure there were people asking for it but to say the main reason they brought in the opposite genders was community outrage is hyperbole, we have more than one reason to believe they would have been introduced in ARR anyway. Your point's still valid, I'm just saying.

Not near as much of a stretch as you might think:
Bugs Bunny is a male character.Yoshi-P has a tradition of spoiling reveals based on the outfit he's wearing each day at fanfest. When they announced a new race was coming he turned around and pointed to the back of his t-shirt which had a clear Bugs Bunny on the back as the 'hint'. Unless he's going wildly off base and trying to troll people, it's Viera.
Now, people didn’t start asking questions until we saw the lack of male viera in the reveal, but that was mainly because people believed that there was no way SE would commit to something so patently bad, that had only downsides. Something they themselves corrected in the lead up to 2.0.
Se Never said there would be a male version. It was all fan hype that did that.wooow. this isn't an SJW issue. This is, at the WORST a false advertising issue, and at best a VERY skeezy, shady 'hide the facts as long as we possibly can so people maintain the hype for things' issue. They went out of their way to hide males, despite including them in lore. To disregard females despite their blatant existence in FFX. This isn't a social justice issue, this is a 'literally why in god's name did you think it was ok to mislead people this way' issue. ..also no healers. 4 years no healers. it'll be at 6 years before we healers will see another chance at maybe having a new option.

I'm actually fairly happy they are as they've always been too./My future Viera self waves bye bye.
On a more serious note, I am personally, and selfishly happy that there doesn't appear to be any male Viera incoming. I always gravitate towards playable races in games that only consist of female members (e.g., Asari from ME). But if I step back from selfish mode a little bit, I can see how including male Viera would have resulted in a higher number of happy players overall, since I assume that I am in the tiny minority for whom having male Viera would actually make us less happy---and even then, it's the kind of less happy that we could probably live with.
That's really the most sympathy that anyone who is upset over this is going to get from me, though, as I just can't relate/empathise.
All these upset people seem to be upset that something that never existed outside their own imagination of what it might have been didn't materialize.
Even the concept art matching the female viera is not even remotely close to what all these complaint threads are claiming it would have been
And we already have the ability to make diminutive males in miqote and midlander and even elezen can have those features in a taller race
And we already have the ability to make super muscular women with roegadyn and Highlander.
And lalafel you can't even tell if it's male or female unless you know the animation differences if androgenous is the goal
The claims of needing to fill a gap are just aren't true outside the people that openly just say they want a character that looks like it's from underage hentai
I disagree with this. Highlanders aren't super muscular in frame or at max "chiseled" by any metric. Not when compared to their "softer" Hylean counterpart. Not when compared to femroes. Not when compared to the range of other female playable character options in range from smallest to biggest. When the other "big girl" in the game is still 24 inches minimum shorter than my femroe and only distinguishable from the "smaller" version of their race in stance not actual visually discernible size, you can hardly call it the muscular woman option.
If you want to be female and big in this game you have one option. It kind of sucks that there isn't a fat option in this game, but it is what it is and fat isn't popular with much people other than me in a wish fulfillment based game like this.
I know I'd personally love a new race of some sort with actually fat females (or just another big type similar to femroe but beastly...like um...I don't know, as the counterpart to the hrothgar). There are gaps that could be filled. Female body type variation is one of them.
As I'm a relatively new player it's not a game breaker for me that these gaps in representation do exist, because there is other representation and an almost overwhelming amount of customization in this game.
I know that were it not for deciding to ungenderlock races at some point, I would not even have my femroe to play. While knowing that does make me sympathize with people who expected unlocked viera (since this feels like a step back), it also makes me hopeful that at some point in the future they might unlock viera and hrothgar. Maybe they intend to release the other gender models later because they aren't ready yet? No one likes incomplete character models. It helps me to hold onto hope for a later release date because, like I said before, female hrothgar would be neat if they make them proportionate to their male counterparts.
I get being upset about this, and as a person who unsubbed from WoW several weeks ago over a disagreement in how they treated employees, I think unsubbing for any level of dissatisfaction with the game is valid. I don't disagree with announcing it on the forums, either. This is hopefully the one place your feedback can be heard by the people who can do anything to increase your satisfaction.
I do hope they implement the male and female versions of viera and hrothgar eventually and people unsubbing get to return. I tried a lot of MMOs when I quit WoW and this is the only one that felt complete, even in comparison to WoW itself, as so much of the game's lore is found outside of the game for some reason. It kind of sucks to know what the other gaming options are out there for people quitting this one. I'm sad for all of you.
Good decision SE!
the memes have been great thus far
