They're meant to be an animalistic race, though, aren't they? That's similar to how it works in the animal kingdom for some species.

For 99% of mammals, sex ratios are 1:1 at birth. There are some weird edge cases like some weird shrew or lemming that has an extra possible mutated X chromosome so they have many more females. If miqo'te, viera, and hrothgar have messed up chromosomes, it would make sense why we've heard of hyur having children with elezen and au ra (and potentially roegadyn according to some NPCs) but not those.

Sex ratio in mammals tends to be pretty even, with any skew still resting comfortably in the 50-60% range. Lions do tend have a skew but it favors females. And again, that isn’t birthrate as much as it is that prides tend to only allow for 1 mature male at a time- the rest get kicked out when they reach adulthood, and many die.

Hroth being humanoid, of high intelligence, and with an advanced civilization would make it very difficult for them to maintain their population for very long. The females would likely have long gestation periods and the children would likely have a pretty extensive period where they would need to be cared for. And being an advanced civilization I’m gonna guess (hope?) the females have a choice of if they want to have children at all and then how many.

Like you said, it’s a fantasy race so they aren’t exactly beholden to the laws of reality. But speculating using what we know, I agree the lore isn’t great. In the end it’s just like that to cover the real issue that the devs didn’t have the resources to make the other genders, but wanted to leave it open in case they decide to later.

Tbh the lore for both of this races is, generally speaking, way way worse than that of any of the others, most likely due to the fact that it only really is here so they didnt have to add the missing genders at launch.

The lore for male viera is essentially the same for male miqo’te. The only exception is the male viera are “loners and hide in the woods”. We see a pretty good amount of male Miqo’te amongst npcs and populating the world so that argument of them being born less doesn’t hold up as well.

I am not an animal expert but do we have a lot of mammals where the amount of females is much more smaller than the males? I know that it can happen for some animals but mammals are a bit different with them raising their children.

As a female myself I just find the thought of female Hrothgars either having to constantly giving birth or having to take care of a huge amount of babies (do they even have the ability to feed them all?) a bit unsettling. Of course they are a bestial fantasy race but I just dont find the lore behind them really good.

Sci Show (I think) did a video on this. Basically any population with a majority of one sex is unsustainable, even if the social norms of the species mean only a few of one sex or the other is actually doing the breeding. Bees, for example, only have one breeding female per colony while elephant seals (I think it was) have one breeding male per pod, but both species make pleanty of members that don't reproduce of that sex.

The thing basically becomes, though, when reproduction is a contest to be able to spread your genes, if you have a species like the viera, if one male is able to spread his genes though a tribe, and develops a gene variation that causes him to father more males, then he has a genetic advantage over other males as over the generations, his genes will result in more viera until they reach a point where there are an overabundance of males and females are able to be the ones spreading more of their genes while many males never pass along their genes. Conversely if someone in that species with abundance of males and few females develops a gene mutation that enables more females to be born, it will become the dominant gene reversing the makeup of the tribes to the point that males are the rarity.

The only stable population of a species is to have an near equal number of males and females be born. That said... this is a fantasy world, so they can write rules into the world and don't have to rely entirely on real world genetics messing things up.

Male miquote are supposed to be even more rare than male viera. They do a good job showing this with regard to NPCs... but player characters definitely dispel this bit of lore.

@wereotter: Thank you for the information about the ratio of genders in nature. It was quite a good read. And yeah they are fantasy races yet I still feel a bit bad for Hrothgar. I also wonder how many females are even still alive especially after all that happened to Bozja.
