I was actually wondering if that's why female viera's racial gear looks the way it does. I was half joking but yeahFemales are clearly feminine, males are ambiguous to other races in ways that would make them able to pass for women if they wanted to or if the viewer makes assumptions based on their own race's standards rather than understanding Viera's.
You could even speculate that it's why Viera dress does emphasise their female-ness so it's clearer to them.
I'd like to leave a tidbit of the Q&A from Matsuno here.
Q: What about their gender identity? Do they not have that on their mind while growing up?
A: They do not think about it until puberty starts
Q: So are they just accepting it after puberty? It sounds scary to me that once they are old enough, they are suddenly being told "You're Male, you have to leave the village now"
A: For us a big influence while growing up is our environment, "As a girl/boy this is what you have to do and how you have to behave". In that sense, Viera aren't raised like that. Their approach to education and raising keeps this in mind. The surrounding environment is different to our present age.

All I can say is that their lore is pretty interesting to me and I'd like to learn more about it.

Sure that's the meta reason, but then they went and decided that Fran's gear isn't "Fran's gear" but "typical female Viera gear" that everyone wears.
They only ever give us three outfits per gear series, really. And it would probably be strange when from an in-game perspective they'd be giving away Viera racial gear to everyone (including men) but you still can't have the others.

And here we are talking about naked children, goddammit Yoship, couldn't you have made them rough and older? This is what we wanted to avoid; instead of us talking about the 20 or 30 something year old Male Viera we're here talking about naked children.

Exactly my thoughts. I recall that interview from awhile back, and I never brought it up here, because of how uncomfortable it is. I don't think it's even worth discussing it, made up race or not. Either way, some of the justification I've read for them being "androgynous" can be referred to as disturbing, and it's too bad this has been brought up. Like, why was that question even asked?![]()

I honestly don't see the problem with it when we are talking about biology in a non-sexualised way.Exactly my thoughts. They've made that statement that you can't tell them apart as children and without going to that level of biological detail there is no way to clarify - for the sake of properly understanding where the race is coming from - whether that just means they're dressed the same or whether nobody, not even the child themself, can possibly tell which gender they are.
They're not even giving a detailed description of body parts. I don't need to hear about that. But the question of "clothes-on or clothes-off identical" does need to be clarified if that's the concept they have of the race.
I'm not sure if you're trying to be sarcastic or not, but I get the impression that it's which parts of them develop at puberty, if you catch that drift. (And that certainly is all the detail I want to know.)

The problem is I don't think many in this community are just "talking about biology in a non-sexualised way", but I digress.I honestly don't see the problem with it when we are talking about biology in a non-sexualised way.

Anyway, it still makes no sense, as even still they hit puberty at a similar age as humans, meaning they have time to develop like humans. So, they should be easily distinguishable by their 20's, as males. They shouldn't look androgynous at all, and it shouldn't be used as justification for them to look androgynous, in my opinion.
