WOW I never saw 14's AM until now. Just wow. Pathetic. Horrible. And I made a statement saying that SE is known for making the best spell animations in the Final Fantasy series.... Boy was I wrong.

Notice how that 50 Conj was wearing the EXACT SAME cloak you get at lvl 6 or lvl 11? But it's Black -_- Serious Copy Paste in gear too!

I concur. The spell animation in this game is horrid and 11 dominates 14 in yet another category.

    Well to be totally honest,

I think the Ancient Magic from both games look pretty crap, although for different reasons, and naturally I'm going to give FFXI a free pass since it's a game built within the tech limits of 2002/2003.

There really is no excuse for how disappointing AM in FFXIV looks. Seeing it for the first time like this is pretty shocking, and were I a mage I'd be more than underwhelmed/pissed. Flare looks less like a star gone supernova and more like those firecrackers you toss/light on your garage driveway.

To be fair, the animations themselves look cool, they just need some serious steroids. Example: Tornado needs to last a few seconds and have a much larger/violent looking vortex swirling around, potentially turning the sky immediately surrounding the enemy dark, while flare should have much larger flame orbs and have something akin to the sound effects in FFIV/FFVI, in which it sounded like stars were literally crashing into your face, with maybe a sort of haze appearing over the mob for like a second after the main animation ends.

Seriously, I'm hoping that battle animations are a big part of the supposed overhaul they're doing. Those effects just don't do the game justice.

This. Ancient magic is a joke. Even the regular magic is a joke.

I thought those were just placeholders in the beta. When retail came along and I saw that the animations hadn't changed AT ALL, I had a very big :-/ on my face for a while.

yea the animation is pretty lack luster, as well as the damage vs any thing that maters. got to say the mechanic for it is pretty nifty though. Magic time bomb go!

Accualy i like the idea behind the AM in XIV. its a Timed Nuke. So say the DD's got the mob down a lot and tha Nuke was the finishing touch or say 3 Conjs nukeing all die but the Mob still has the effects of the AM and all 3 AMS pop wile there all dead thay still get credit for the kill and the drops. Unless ofcorse the deaths wipe all effects on the mob.

I would like to see for example Flare. You cast it and a mid sized fire flash hits the Mob then when the timmer hits zero a HUGE explosion of fire energy is released in a masive fireball sorta like 11s but a hell of a lot better. What would be great also is some kind of effect to the players who stand close to the mob. If say Burst is used a HUGE electric flash of energy at the end of the spell and it makes your screen flash like exiting a dark cave how the visual is very bright then resets to normal. That would be awesome!

And add an effect that like any Mobs near the mob effected with a AM once the AM timmer hits zero and the blunt of the spell is released all mobs around the effected mob will get like burn , frost , ext. As an after effect of the spell. That would be usefull and impresive

If you die it doesnt go off, and the reason it works how it does is so you're not stuck casting, you can set it off then concentrate on other things such as staying alive and such, which reduces challenge and intensity, makes the game hold your hand. Also if the mob moves you wont hit it, if you move you wont hit it, and ofc since the mob is claimed prior to the 30second cooldown, if you have a DD it will most likely be dead.

Which makes it only workable on NM's but then the damage is so ultra shit its not worth it.

    So in Summery:
    - Spell looks awful
    - Damage is awful
    - Mechanics are awful

I like this, you froze this mob so much you droped the nearby temperature and even his buddies near him are cold, or that THunderbot hit so hard it arked to his friends or that fire was so intense it set his friends on fire. INteresting, but I wonder why if the fire is so intense, does it not burn the tank? There could be some party dynamics here that could help keep them safe, but it could get crazy in a hurry, but no need to do it, just interesting to think about.

I think what they were trying to do is make it so the spell effects dont obscure whats going on in the fight(a problem eq2 had in raids) but they kind of overdid it.
