Fatal DirectX Errors

Hi there.

So I was gifted this game so I could play with others towards the end of last year - and since day 1 I have been having issues with DirectX. Through trial and error and *luck* I have been able to alleviate it and have had sessions or days without it, but invariably I suffer the issue at least once a play through.

And at this point it seems to have fucked with my graphic card in of itself - no other games or tasks have caused problems, but twice now ff14 has outright blue-screened my laptop, and there was a whole side issue or my laptop not acknowledging the graphics card at all for a day directly after that crash. It's also not old and a gaming laptop that has had 0 issues with anything else so... : /

I will say I switched from Directx 11 to 9 recently and had some more luck, until particularly recently with both blue screens being in that mode. I also tired a wipe of the game from the system and reinstalled last night, and I was able to get into the game a few times but almost instantly upon loading in it freezes and I cannot play.

Not sure what else to do at this point! I really enjoy the game when it's working, and it was a git to play with people dear to me, so I want to get this solved. As is it's unplayable, and has been on and off, as at times I've gotten Fatal DirectX errors (of so many numbers, I apologize I don't have a list at the moment) so frequently, or even upon just hitting 'Play'.

That said there's overall been no rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes it seems like playing in higher volume areas, being in parties or fates is stressing it, but other times I've played 6 hours with no problem and then in the middle of nothing, nowhere, with no one - there's the error.

Also preemptively, while I'll do whatever I can to suss this out as asked/provide info, I am not super up on tech jargon and google isn't always helpful. So definitely use layman's terms, but I'll be as helpful as I can! I'm just so frustrated and want to play this game, ugh.

First, you can try a clean boot. Simply open the task manager and select the 'Start up' tab. Disable everything here and restart the PC. This will make sure that no background processes are interfering with the game. When you play the game, make sure to have no other programs running, especially overlays (Geforce Experience, Discord overlay, etc.).

Open the Nvidia Control Panel and going to 'Manage 3D Settings'. From here, select 'Program Settings' and select Final Fantasy XIV. You should see an option to select the GPU. Make sure it's set to your dedicated graphics card (it may be set to 'Auto' by default).

Set compatibility mode to Windows 7 Right-click on the ffxivboot.exe file and select ‘Properties.’ Then select the ‘Compatibility’ tab and choose Windows 7.

If it helps make it less vague: Pretty much EVERY listed "Fatal DirectX Error" in these forums has happened to me, since I started playing the game. They've come and gone in severity/numbers but have never stopped.

I've done a clean boot before to no avail. I've just done the other two suggestions, and I'll update from there, but an update from yesterday:
I managed to get into the game, several times! On DirectX 9. That said, before long the game would freeze up, but only visually. The audio would keep going, and to some degree I could hit buttons, move, head sound effects from the menu. If I opened task manager from there it would sometimes knock it out of it, but eventually it would do it, and go black/stop allowing input and I would have to exit entirely. No fatal directx pop-ups but clearly not ideal gameplay, lol.

I'd suggest checking the Windows Event Log to get more details on why it's crashing.

XIV is notoriously picky about how it interacts with both the Nividia drivers and Windows drivers so if things aren't perfectly aligned between the three, errors of varying severity will occur, ranging from simple client crashes to GPU/PC crashes like you're experiencing. Down/upgrading Nvidia drivers can sometimes fix it.

I started having GPU shutdowns after Windows upgraded me to version 1809, which I seem to have finally resolved by both downgrading to a known stable Nividia driver (416.94 with the latest Windows version) and also updating my motherboard chipset drivers to the latest ones as well. After doing so, I only got a minor client crash as my latest error, which I believe was tied to the Windows Game Mode being on, so I shut that off and am hoping things are finally back to normal.

XIV is notoriously picky about how it interacts with both the Nividia drivers and Windows drivers so if things aren't perfectly aligned between the three, errors of varying severity will occur, ranging from simple client crashes to GPU/PC crashes like you're experiencing. Down/upgrading Nvidia drivers can sometimes fix it.

I started having GPU shutdowns after Windows upgraded me to version 1809, which I seem to have finally resolved by both downgrading to a known stable Nividia driver (416.94 with the latest Windows version) and also updating my motherboard chipset drivers to the latest ones as well. After doing so, I only got a minor client crash as my latest error, which I believe was tied to the Windows Game Mode being on, so I shut that off and am hoping things are finally back to normal.

Hmm. I'll have a look and see after I get back from work, but I JUST updated both my windows and my Nvidia. I'll try that combo you have, though admittedly *downgrading* a driver sounds trickier to suss out than just upgrading one to me, hah.

I was just trying to play before I leave for work and I'm not getting crashes but it keeps freezing, if I pull out and into task manager it'll go black and then come back, and then I can take like 5 steps and it starts flashing green in the sky and such, before it will freeze visibly again, or sometimes just go black and stay there.

TBH, you might be dealing with a faulty GPU if you're visibly seeing graphics distortion and such prior to the crashes.

My game was running fine at a smooth 60 FPS prior to any of the crashes without any visual weirdness going on which made me refuse to believe it was the GPU at fault. It also always occurred in extremely low stress situations with scarcely any players around, so it had nothing to do with GPU load, either. I even stress tested the GPU for several minutes using Furmark and it had no issues, so I knew it had to be a driver conflict of some sort.

EDIT: I've now been playing for close to six hours with no crashes, so I feel safe to say I've resolved the issue. It definitely would not hurt to make sure your motherboard drivers are up to date and to do some research to see what Nvidia drivers are stable on whatever Windows update version you're using. Running tests on your GPU and RAM to ensure they aren't failing is also a good idea.

See the problem is, I'd believe that more easily except FF14 is the only thing it has ever has issue with? And it's relatively new. \:
But as I said in the OP, I'm not deeply tech savvy, so, insert a shrug here, hah.

Well! Like I was saying, the new issue appears to be a screen freezing issue? Which means there's not really been anything to show you, a screencap isn't exactly going to show that the music is still going and everything but I suddenly can't do anything ect ect. And it's not been coming with an error message.

I do have this though, it did it a couple of times and the third time I tried the ctrl alt delete trick, then clicking back to it which normally seemed to fix it for the short term. This time it went and got downright unresponsive, haha.

(And disclaimer, haha: I'm having this issue even without discord running in the background, and the overlay is off. Just so happened to give it a go today. I was having the same problem the night before last, actually, with it spiking particularly while trying to do a dungeon.)
