Remove the Profanity Filter

Hi all,

I dont know if this is ever been posted alr, but im new to the forum and dont hav the time atm to spit all pages out while searching on "Profanity"

So the case: I got a penalty last week for using Profanity, but ingame is an option which allows u to turn On/Off Profanity (see image on the bottom, where u can see i did disable it, means i see nothing as Censored), so why do i get a suspension for using profanity if there is an option ingame to turn it On/Off?
This really bugs me since when i bought this game it said on the cover PEGI 16, which means 16 years and older, which should mean that there are no any exceptions for any country, if it would be for 12 years and older i would recommend to remove the profanity filter completely so that most profanity words just gets censored and which means the staff can give penalties to others who clearly avoid those then.

Some people don't want to see profanity, so why should that option be removed for them?

Also I feel like you had to have said something more than A Naughty Word to get in trouble. I've definitely said the odd swear word every now and again and received no disciplinary action.

PEGI 16 is the rating assigned to FFXIV in the EU, but North American versions have it rated at T (13+), so people younger than 16 do play this game; not all countries share the same rating, and how ratings are determined can vary from region to region. In addition, online interactions are always harder to police than swearing added to the game's script and as such usually do not contribute to assigned ratings (in the US, at least, there's often an 'online interaction' warning that tells people that online interactions may not align with the game's rating, as you can't completely control people's actions).

Profanity and offensive language is specifically against the Terms of Service you agree to when playing the game, but much like the use of third-party parsers, in practice it often falls into a grey area of whether or not you'll be punished for it. GMs don't go digging through every chat log just to find instances of profanity so that they can punish people for it; that would be a huge waste of time and resources. The profanity filter exists for people who don't want to see it in their chat logs for any number of reasons, since SE can only punish you after the fact. Generally speaking, the only times you'll be punished for profanity will be when you are specifically cursing at someone, in which case the report will often be made not just because you swore but because you are actively harassing or verbally abusing someone. Otherwise, swearing won't usually be punished; I've occasionally used profanity by accident myself and never received punishment for it. If you were reported for using profanity, either you happened to encounter the extremely rare person who is so offended by profanity that they felt the need to report you over it (again, this is very unusual, so I'm always a little suspicious about these claims) or you were using profanity to verbally abuse someone, in which case the report was justified.

My friend know it by now. When I start swearing I just random hit keys on my keyboard. My way of slamming a fist on the keyboard. No way you get punished for that yet you do get rid of stress that way.

It’s all dependent on if you were reported or not by someone else. Whatever OP said, it was reported by someone—which probably means that it was more than just a regular curse word, or they were using particular curse words frequently/in a public chat like /shout or /say.

cus if i want to insult them i mostly ignore them and fill out a report after where i explain everything into details, but i never ever did curse like how u meant it.

You report people you want to insult? I hope you just worded that wrong.

And still, teasing isn't a defense. People don't just get slapped with punishment because they said 'butt' instead of 'but'. There's more to this, I'm sure of it.

Thats now the thing, i never insult ppl i only tease others, but i never use cursing words towards others, cus if i want to insult them i mostly ignore them and fill out a report after where i explain everything into details, but i never ever did curse like how u meant it.
Unless they did punish me on my own BUT word, i mostly say butt instead of but, it just goes automatically, but then again, thats just a teasement, not meant as bad word, and i really cant see which is normally censored and what not.

Yeah, I’m fairly certain “butt” won’t even fall into the “Profanity” category. It’s unlikely it wasn’t something more than “butt”. Either a “worse” curse word, or you used a slur.

If you were using a curse word even as a light tease and someone interpreted as an insult, they could have reported you for it and you will be punished for it if they took offense or thought you were insulting them; regardless of your intent. Either way, you were reported for using profanity and received a strike for it.

so i really wonder where my penalty came from.

From the chat logs — GMs have access to all of the chat logs in-game (including “private” ones like FC and LS), so if you cursed in chat and someone reported you, that’s where the strike came from. It’s unlikely that it was an error or an accident, since the GMs are required to go over chat logs when someone reports an occurrence in said logs.
