To her generation, video games have always been toys for children, and the marketing of especially the '80s and '90s worked way to hard to reinforce that notion. As far as I know, the majority of gamers have always been in that 18-34 range, which makes sense considering which demographic has that magical combination of free time and disposable income. I'm not surprised that there are so many of us (relatively speaking) in our 30s playing FFXIV. After all, we grew up with games, they've grown up with us, and we generally aren't too put-out by a monthly subscription fee.
Despite my "old age", I'm the youngest in my FC and they sure do love to make me aware of that fact. They constantly toss out some old references and colloquialisms leaving me saying, "Huh?" xD

When I reflect on a lot of the gaming commercials even of today, it's usually males in the 18-25 range, which probably does make up the overall majority of gamers today, or at least the target demographic. But there are so many people much older and females playing games today, but no complaints here. I prefer to live in the shadows!

Oh yeah, there are a lot more of us females playing video games than media would have folks believe. XD

Close. That honor belongs to the Dreamcast. Beat PS2 by a few years. And I believe EQOA was a year before XI was on consoles, since it didn't need the HDD.

EQOA was the EQ Liite version, though. XI was the first full-fledged MMORPG experience on consoles.

To the thread, 39 and gaming in some form since I was 4ish. I played King's Quest on the computer of my babysitter's kid. I can't remember a time I haven't had gaming to keep me busy. I started MMOs with vanilla EQ in 1999.

I'm going to stay online for a bit now, but most often I'm ingame between 18-22 UTC (sometimes at other random times too). You're welcome to join my FC as well. We're not too large but we have some people online most nights.
Yeah sorry wasn't online; about to go on though so I'll try add you. If not feel free to keep trying to add me as well. XD

I wish it was easier to add people from different servers. And perhaps a different datacenter friend list as well.

You give me hope that I can continue to play video games for as long as I want.

Home game consoles didn't appear until the early 70's
I built my first computer, an Imsai 8080 around 1975 (Kit of parts, had to solder everything) And I still have it, but it doesn't run. Storage for it was paper tape, then 70KB floppy disks. No commercial software available other than the OS. http://oldcomputers.net/imsai8080.html
I love old computers; especially those first ones that filled entire rooms! But yeah... normal folks couldn't own those.

Yeah its annoying; well if we ever end up in the same party feel free to add me. Odin and Lich are going to still be on the same datacenter.

I currently have two characters on Goblin. I plan to start a new character on primal and then move one of my characters back to Aether next month so I will have a character on each data center.

I'm in my forties and enjoy outing myself by telling the young 'uns about the dark ages of video games when we walked 20 miles uphill in the snow just to get to the Space Invaders machine at the roller skate rink. I still have my fold out Donkey Kong game tucked away somewhere lol!
