This isn't really based on anything, but I think the pom is like the lekku of twi'lek in Star Wars, as in, contains the brain. While I was doing moogle repeatables, I came across one of the moogles saying their pom was aching similar to one would say they have a headache. But yeah, just my speculation.

If I had to guess I'd say it's a source of bioluminescent light, a lure akin to anglerfish, or a way to attract a mate not dissimilar to bird plumage (though present on males and females alike). Flashy bits tend to be for attracting mates or warning other animals of danger, and well, moogles aren't all that threatening on average...

It's never been explained in-universe and honestly was probably just included in their design as a way to make them cuter... and has been present in every iteration of moogle in the franchise, so it would have to be on XIV's regardless of whether there's a lore explanation for them or not.

Decided to impulse roll on Okita's banner and my Devil's Luck kicked in, getting me Ozymandias!

Kept rolling with the leftovers and got a gold Saber... but it was just a third Mordred. :'(

Objection! The FFIII Moogles in their Famicom incarnation (technically an unused asset from FFII) didn't have poms simply because of palette and resolution limitations, which were carried into their second appearance in FFV. Pomless Moogles abominations Mogs also appear in FFVII (and Crisis Core), and FFVIII. (Though MiniMog actually manages to rock the look better than one would expect.)

A little tidbit I picked up yesterday in the lvl 45 WHM quest the moogle talks about having his pom taking off by kenna(sp?) mostly in jest and seems to imply it would kill him/her. This is when they were sent out to search for clues on the missing urn of a tama right before you get holy. Sorry I dont have a link to the specific dialog shouldn't be hard to find though.

It definitely seems like it's some kind of sensory organ - maybe for an aetherial "sixth sense". One of the daily quests mentions that they're quite prone to aether sickness due to their natural aptitude for manipulating their aetherial flow, so maybe it's something to do with that.

Moogle's poms have existed in almost all of their versions (except 3 and 7). They're highly sensitive and might be sensory, but there's never any information. They're probably there just to look cute and distinctive. The moogles also have a strong desire to keep their poms supple and soft, probably being akin to a mane or a bird's crest, something that conveys status and health. In XIV they glow, so they might be attuned to aether or something?

Ah I see! Thank you, I will leave a question there and hope

Defs agree its to make them look cute, tho couldn't help but wonder if there was some more lore to them haha. Tho its interesting that they are still supposed to be fluffy in FFXIV, cause they defs dont look it.

There's a quiz question in FF13-2 that says the Moogles in that game use their crystals (where the others in the series' poms are) to fly and the wings are for show. Could it be the same for other Moogles?

XIV moogles use their wings for flying though. It's why we become slaves to the postmoogle because he had never seen a windmill before and injured a wing when he got too close and couldn't fly while it mended.
