Game action animations stop, music stops, but game plays normally

Having a weird problem.

FFXIV is sometimes, during fights, having all animations for actions freezing. I can move around (and it's random if walking animations happen or not), but all actions stop animating, both from myself and from party members. After about 5-10 seconds of this, the music will cut out, while all other sound effects are fine (walking, etc). I can rotate the camera and everything is smooth as butter... and then all the animations happen at once and catch up.

I did replace my system: Had an older system that died, then played on a PS4, all using the same network connection, but since putting in the new PC I'm having this problem.


For reference, the new system is a Ryzen 5 2600, (stock speed), 16gb DDR4 3000mhz, GTX 980 card, FFXIV installed to an SSD. However, this was also happening when the graphics card was a GTX 750ti.


After going through another Sirensong Grotto duty.. I'm convinced it's not lag. On 3 occasions, there was no animations coming from actions being used by me or my party; but damage was being registered, and when arriving at the second boss: Stack markers from the boss were still happening and I was able to move to and get hit by it, and the music crapped out when the boss died, there were 10 seconds of wait time... then BOOM, all the animations for the last 15 seconds happened at once and the chest showed up

If it was lag, my actions wouldn't be registering damage on the boss nor would my HP be going down, nor would the boss be dying during the lag spike, nor would I have been able to stack and take damage from a stack as normal.


So it's definitely not lag.

To clarify, this only started happening after you started using your new PC, correct? Not when you were using the old one?

Yes, it was only happening on the new PC.
I did a full reinstall of windows, after flashing my BIOS on the MB to the most recent release (turns out there had been an update in the last week or so). It was happening anywhere and everywhere, from loading screens having the music drop, to walking around outside, using a striking dummy, tanking in instances, anywhere.

I installed OBS to attempt to capture this after my reinstall and BIOS flash, however, it would appear the BIOS update resolved the issue; it seems the MB was throttling down the processor to 1500mhz or so and causing a bottleneck.

EDIT: And as I say that, it happens again; I was swapping to WAR from FSH in Upper La Noscea to help with a fate, and my emote wouldn't play (though it hit the chat log), music cut out (but other sounds were playing) and when I swapped back to FSH, I remained equipped as a WAR. Back to the drawing board.

I discovered something: When I said 'it had been fixed' I had also turned off the FPS cap in-game (after thinking about the pinned thread about GPU usage) and I wasn't getting any slowdowns.

Then I imported my PS4 client settings in order to copy over my shared macros.

This turned the FPS cap back on, and immediately afterwards I started experiencing the animation stoppage.

After turning the cap back off, it the stoppages ended.
I think it may be related to the 100% GPU usage with outlined in the pinned thread.

EDIT:

Wow, yeah, confirmed. Turned FPS cap of 60 back on and attempted to recreate issue...

GPU jumping to 100% utilization, and the recording to try to capture the issue froze on one frame while the issue was happening. Sound still playing, but the graphics froze on one frame. This happened during the Shiva Hard fight, and Shiva died during the 'freeze' time. Checked HWMonitor afterwards and max GPU Utilization had been recorded at 100%.

Going to head into the same fight with FPS Cap off, and record, and see.

Yep. FPS cap off, no problems with the recording, no slowdown.

In all of these scenarios, did you have OBS in the background (not necessarily while recording)? Did you have the overlay active? If so, it may have something to do with the combination of of OBS and the locked frame rate. I'm not sure why this would be happening, however.

I'm assuming you are locking the frame rate with the in-game frame limiter, correct? Can you try locking it from outside the game (such as using the Nvidia Control Panel)? Does this cause the same issue?

When the problem first started occuring, OBS was not installed at all.

In-game frame rate limiter was being used. I've swapped to a Framerate cap in MSI Afterburner, and even on maximum settings, GPU utilization rarely hits 90%; usually between 70-80.
After an hour of play, there were no slowdowns, no missed animations, even while recording.

Tangentially related, I noticed some slowdown in Windows 10 as well, so I removed any and all overclocking. So running at stock 3600~mhz for the processor (ryzen 5 2600) and 2400 stock MHz for the memory (which should theoretically be able to hit 3k with no issue).

Going to run a Memtest overnight to see if I got a lemon mem stick.

Memtest showed 0 issues with the memory.

Issue can now be closed.

After testing the SSD using a benchmark program, I had purchased a faulty SSD. Replaced the SSD under warranty and the game is now running smooth.
