So i just go drill cannons, from the description, it says you can get more dmg if target is petrified. is level 5 petrify required for this?

on level 5 petrify description it says : Petrifies all enemies in a cone before you. Chance of successful attack is low. Enemy level must be a multiple of 5. Has no effect on enemies whose level is higher than your own.

so this not sound very reliable, any thoughts from more experienced blue mages on this? i still didn't get the spell yet, i tried to solo the dungeon and failed so far. will try when i get more levels.

If petrify works and you combine drill cannons with bristle it can be very strong, but as you mentioned its inconsistent, also anything that petrify works on can also be hit by the rng instant kill/half health moves so if youre wanting to fish for procs theyre better. If youre about killing trash consistently then acorn bomb+ thousand needles and rams voice is better, but needles doesnt work that well at 50.

Currently, yes, Level 5 Petrify is the only way players have of causing Petrify in order to proc Drill Cannon's bonus damage.

No, it is not particularly reliable.

It's why the go-to combo for BLU tends to be The Ram's Voice into The Dragon's Voice. As The Ram's Voice is 100% guaranteed to affect the target with Deep Freeze (Provided it isn't immune) which gives the bonus damage to The Dragon's Voice.

Drill Cannon is a useful skill during the Masked Carnivale though, because it deals Physical damage rather than Magical damage which is noteworthy for some fights (Also note, this does mean that it won't get a damage boost from Peculiar Light either)
