Why does it seem you need a hunting retainer to get skins at a decent rate?

I just got to HW with my DoH/DoL and getting skins seems to be way worse compared to ARR: I can kill 10+ enemies and if I'm lucky I get 1-3 skins

It really doesn't help that with HW I now need 3 skins for a single leather, whereas before 1 skin = 1 leather.

Can only suggest buying them off the market board instead. Hunting mobs to get skins doesn't seem to be a good use of time when you can make gil faster doing other things and then buying them off the market board.

The drop rate is probably low for the sake of economy balance or to stop bots from getting rich quicker.

I feel like there are a ton of other things they would've changed by now if they thought the economy or bots were a major issue (IE, removing gil drops from ARR dungeons so the gil farm bots no longer have easy access to an infinite source of income).

Definitely worthwhile checking the marketboard, because people are often trying to sell stuff.

The increasing number of raw materials per item is quite frustrating.

MB costs fluctuate so often. On Famfrit for example, I have seen the same item go from 6 mil down to 1.2 mil in a single 24 hour period. Luckily the cheaper items don't fluctuate that badly, but they see the same drastic changes in relative terms of their costs. MB farming is an efficient way to make money and get the required items, so long as you have the time to dedicate.

Probably because your the same level as they are and can't kill them super fast.

Meanwhile I routinely throw away skins to save inv space. Perhaps I should be selling them.

Veteran healers don't care if we need to heal, but right now we don't. We want interesting things to do during the downtime other than a 30s dot and a single filler spell that hasn't changed from lvl 4 to lvl 90.
Dead DPS do no DPS. Raised DPS do 25/50% lower DPS. Do the mechanics and don't stand in bad stuff.
Other games expect basic competence, FFXIV is pleasantly surprised by it. Other games have toxic elitism. FFXIV has toxic casualism.[/LIST]

Because you do. You can buy them off the MB as others suggested, but the game isn't really set up to have you go farm mobs for materials if you want to get them yourself. Take what you get while going about your normal business and use retainers/MB to fill in the gaps.

The maximum number of skins a single combat retainer brings back in 40-60 minutes is 10. If you're not getting at least that many in that amount of time you are having some of the crappiest luck in the world.

Don't get me wrong, I know the drop rate sucks, but on my NIN using mug every time it is up I average about 15-30 skins in about 10 minutes. Every kill is a potential drop of 1-7 skins and wiping out the area of the targeted mobs I easily done at a high ilvl with even a healer. It's figures like these why the drop rate is so low, but at the same time I don't see any reason why not to increase the drop rates. All it does is plummet the MB prices for those skins but so what? It's not a big deal.

I have proposed multiple times now for another gathering class that focuses on the acquisition of mob drops, especially skins. Despite the rate I spoke of above, when you're needing a lot of leather it is one of the most mind numbing grinds in the game since you typically need three skins to make one freakin leather. And trust me I use the MB. I frequently buy out everything that is available until the prices get ridiculous.

Pretty sure 1.0 was hinting at the next class being a gatherer focused on skins/wool/meat/milk/other animal byproducts, but it never made it in.

It would certainly be useful though.
