One other piece of advice is to keep current on your class/job quests. At level 30 you will unlock the job(s) for your class. Until 50 there will be a class or job quest every five levels, after 50 there will be one every two or three levels. These quests frequently give you new abilities and gear; do them as soon as they are available. Pre-50 do not enter group content until you have done all available class or job quests as all of the quests until 50 will give you a new ability. The game will inform you whenever you unlock a new class/job quest. The name of the quest will show up under the MSQ guide and clicking it will direct you to where the start NPC is.

A good rule of thumb pre-50 is to keep your gear level within 10 levels of your current level, however, post 50 gear ilevel not level become the number to watch for. As others have said quests should keep you covered for the most part.
