Doesn't Dark Knight have a thing where they can heal themselves by dealing damage?

Yes, yes they do.

The whole concept of healing yourself by hitting the other guy is at least semi-vampiric in nature, though it's using DARKNESS! to simulate the effect rather than being an actual vampire.

Work from that angle, use the idea behind the Dark Knight and apply it to ranged weapon user, watch the DARKNESS! powered guns wreck folks.
Same power source, drastically different playstyle.

OP is refering to Vincent's chaos materia ability, in FF7 his limit break turns him into neat demon like monsters and in FF Dirge of Cerebrus you get to see him in chaos form:





^ Vincent (as you may recall he is this way from experiments by Hojo, that nice guy who made Sephiroth and Cloud who they are - really nice guy, good fam man :P).

So a bit like darkness power you reference I guess but a key point of the OP is not blood sucking but rather transformation.

yes, you can do that. i love this class idea and i want it to grow like a wildfire. i have a thought about the combat style. if you want to go with the scarf as the weapon, i was thinking of vegito from dbz, his fighting is unique like a floating kickboxer and would fit a character like this, and then the scarf would cover your body like bayonettas hair and then youd transform into a behemoth like vincent. (PS sorry for the title)

this would put it into the melee dps category though, so not ideal for what i had originally thought, but still a great idea. and this would keep it unique enough that it wouldnt be forgotten in the plethora of up close fighters.

i just had another idea for how they could activate the transformations. ive been watching seven deadly sins lately, and theres this pig on it that turns into anything he eats, kinda like how ff9s blue mage got their abilities by eating monsters. what if the scarf devours enemies that are low on hp and then youd transform into a monster archtype that shared its style. you eat a tank type enemy and youd turn into a giant, a dps enemy youd turn into a behemoth, magic enemy youd turn into a succubus or something etc.
