In a 6mo. contract, can I cancel extra retainers and be prorated?

My contract will end in May/June and I have no need for my extra retainers anymore. Obviously this amount was deducted in full amount but if I cancel retainers, does this mean they remain on my account and are inactive meaning I still pay for them until June or do I get prorated for the months I didn't use them for?

Also, when the time comes and I don't want to sub for another 6 month. How do I prevent this from happening? The wording in the mogstation is very confusing and I don't want to cancel my account and I don't want to suspend my account either. Do I just remove my credit card from the account?

You only get prorated rate at the start of your subscription for your first month. When you cancel, you're just saying not to renew. You'll have access of your extra retainers for the remainder of your subscription with no refund unless there is some local law that applies to your case.

If you cancel your retainers you'll have access to them until your subscription ends just like Linay said.

If you don't want to resub you can click the 'Cancel Subscription' button in the 'Manage Service Options' tab. You'll be able to play the remaining days.
Just be careful to not click the 'Cancel Service Account'. I don't know why they put them next to each other.

That button doesn't actually do what you think it does (although I think the name of it could be clearer so I can certainly understand why people think that!).

All it does is hide the service account from within the game itself. This might not sound particularly useful, but if you have a service account that doesn't currently have a subscription it will hide it so you can't accidently click it and get booted out of the game since it doesn't have a sub. It also stops you from getting any renewal/expiry emails as essentially the account is deactivated.

But after cancelling a service account the Mogstation page simply has a new button for "Reactivate service account" which does the exact opposite and you can start using it again straight away. If you still have gametime left then you can carry on playing again. It does not pause your gametime though. If you had 30 days left and deactivated for 10 days, you'd still only have 20 days left to use upon reactivating.

However, if you go into the main Square Enix account website and then select update account information and "Cancel Square Enix Account", that will delete your actual account and all service accounts under it.

    SE FAQ links about these:

    Thank you!
I thought it would be cancelled even with an active sub.

I didn't see that in the FAQ:
"Service accounts with an active subscription will remain available until the current subscription period is over."

Their wording / website is pretty confusing and ridiculous lol

I hate how you can't cancel your retainers as something separate. It auto-renewed and I didn't want my retainers to stay, so I ended up paying an extra $40 or-so, for something I didn't want anymore. But what is done is done.

So to summarize, go to mogstation, click on cancel service and it will automatically stop renewing at the end of the 6mo. period, and when that does happen and i get kicked out of the game, i can cancel my retainers manually and then re-enable the subscription?

You don't need to cancel your subscription to cancel extra retainers. In fact, cancelling subscription works the same way as cancelling the retainer service. They both simply tell the system to not renew the subscription, so you won't save any time or money by cancelling your subscription.

Just cancel the retainer service specifically without cancelling your subscription.

You want to go to the Retainer Subscription Service page of the MogStation (Under the Your Account Tab) and then click the "Cancel Subscription" button from there. It'll have you confirm it, but that way it will cancel ONLY your Additional Retainers and nothing else.

Crudely circled images to show you where to go to just cancel your Retainers:
