    Yeah, it's really the strangest thing. I have tried other games I have on Steam and they don't have this issue. I also did try downloading and installing the launcher directly from https://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/ and that launcher does indeed work fine. I don't know how to fix the Steam launcher, and it doesn't appear that others who run the game through Steam have the same issue, but at least I have a good workaround.

    SE have announced a few days ago that from the end of this month, after 5 years, they're changing things to force Steam users to have to launch the game via Steam and we'll no long be able to run the launcher directly.

    Thanks for pointing this out. I wonder if the known bug mentioned in the first link is the problem I'm having. I guess I'll submit a support ticket because if it's not, I really need a resolution to this now.

    Well, all I got from support was to make sure no background processes were running, which since the standard Non-Steam launcher works fine with the same stuff running, seems unlikely that's the cause. Guess my options at this point are deal with having to set core affinity every time I launch the game and hope a patch to the game or Steam fixes this at some point, or buy the standard retail version and make a new account. Neither option is terribly appealing.

    Edit: It seems I shouldn't have been so quick to write off that suggestion, as it turns out the 'Game Boost' feature of Razer Cortex was the issue. Close or even just disable that, issue goes away. So glad this is finally over.
