No, it completely invalidates the relationship and/or marriage. Enix have been known to cancel ingame marriages if you don't make it official via search comment. You must also /embrace your partner every Eorzean hour incase nearby players assume either of you are single, have the same last name, wear your Eternity ring even while raiding, buy and only use the valentines heart chair mount and bridesmoogle minion or you may be reported by other players.

It's a little known fact that the majority of real life marriages are actually fake, due to lack of a FF14 account, thus a search comment.

@Lacan of course you still are if both (or more, Eh? ) parties agreed to it lol. For RP context it might help to put it there but it seems rather unnecessary otherwise especially for this game. I suppose if you had a facebook and for the previous relationships the other person always updated their status but didn't for you that might be a little weird but FFXIV doesn't have that and so I think an announcement is more weird than none.

Also as an aside I didn't know people did this, now I'm thinking about putting in Kupo Nuts or Gysahl Greens or something just for fun XD.

I'd be seriously questioning a relationship in which I wasn't confident enough unless they told the world about it in such a manner.
