Rather than just sending them off to go do their thing and being promoted because of that. To say nothing about other tasks that would have made sense, such as when we did that Grand Company Melee thing in Ishgard. Or when we went through the Ghimlyt Dark alongside the Grand Company forces (Though we were sent with the Doman squad to make them feel safer).

At what point does our squadron start to reflect more on their own performance than ours
Because we're only acting as part of a grand company when doing GC stuff. In the Ghymlit Dark you were the 'warrior of light' fighting alongside the Alliance, not a Flame/Maelstrom/Adders commander on the field.

Once you get into higher ranks, being on the front lines ceases to be desirable. Raubahn is a capable general but even he says his place is back at command and not on the front line even if he wants to be there. During the battle of Cartineaux he wasn't on the front line but commanding from a safe distance.

Being a leader isn't about kicking ass on the front lines but managing the resources and personnel at your disposal effectively.

I don't see why the grand melee thing would be something a GC would promote you for, sure you did well but you did it outside of your GC duties. It makes sense to me that the thigns you get promoted for are things you do for the GC.

Though things are admittedly already a bit weird because the GCs hold no real sway over you. You're free to run around as you please no matter your rank and it can't have any real bearing on the msq aside from your rank being mentioned because the writers have to accomodate for people who have maxed out everything GC wise and people who only joined one because the msq made then and didn't touch anything after getting their chocobo.
