Honestly, a bad player is someone who is unable to play their current role/job to an adequate standard, and has no intentions of ever doing so.

Really, though, there's 3 different levels of "Bad" players.

There's people who are "Bad" because they're new and they're learning. Be it the job or the duty. But as long as they're making an effort to try and learn something it's okay and you should help facilitate them.

There's people who are "Bad" because they just don't care. They're the ones that you will often complain about. With the stereotypical "You don't pay my sub" if you try and help them at all... The ones that just don't use skills. Playing Ice Mage or never using Ninjutsu/Iaijutsu. You know, people that are for all intents and purposes just sightseeing while the rest of the party clears the duty...

Then there's the people who are "Bad" because they're toxic. They might be able to play just fine, but they will either berate others or troll because they feel superior or feel the need to do stupid stuff (Like, that really annoying thing where the tank has pulled enough that they and the healer can handle and then some DPS/Healer decides "Nuuuuu gotta pull 15 full dungeons wall to wall!!!" which leads to wipes because it's almost like someone knew their limits and the DPS weren't good enough to bypass them with quick AoE melting rotations...)

A bad player is a player with a bad attitude. Someone who's unwilling to adapt and has poor teamwork skills.

I'd be willing to expect there'll be as many answers to that question as there are for what defines a "good player", which is to say "a lot". People will have many different perceptions and opinions on the matter. I've said before that I believe a "good" player is one who has a good attitude, communicates with the party when needed, always considers their party members needs and does their best to react and adjust as needed, and has a desire to try to improve themselves when they can.

With that in mind, a "bad" player to me would be one who eschews these virtues, one who is selfish and has no regard for anything other than doing what they want even if it's counter-intuitive to the party's progress, and has no interest in understanding or developing their skills, expecting others to essentially carry them through any content they want to clear. Of course, such things don't apply to all content within the game, but much of the game has a focus on working with others as a team to achieve a goal, whether it be something a simple as a standard dungeon or as tricky as Savage raids. Even things as casual as certain seasonal events still have instances where you need to work with others. Even outside of team content, it's important to show respect for other players you may run into on your server as well. You never know when you may end up joining them in a party, after all.

Now of course, no one's perfect. People make mistakes, whether it's in content or even a social misstep. What sets someone apart is what they do afterwards. A good player will acknowledge their error, apologize, and will try to learn from the experience. A bad player will, of course, do just the opposite.

In short, I don't judge a player by skill alone. After all, skills can be improved upon, and we all start somewhere and also progress at different rates. Patience can be an important virtue as well, particularly where at least one person is still learning.

yikes, i should probably avoid posting here but whatever.

I don't think FFxiv has bad players.

FFxiv caters to many, many playstyles and does so that is gratifying to most. Do I rag on people that mainly focus on casual content and never try to improve? Or focus on crafting/gathering and barely step into combat? Or people that just flip houses for gil? or RPers? No, I don't. Everyone comes to FFxiv for different reasons and just because "their" reason is different from "my" reason does not and should not make them a "bad player".

and yeah, that includes the DPS that don't AOE in dungeons, or the tanks that pull 1 mob at a time in the same dungeon...They sure do play the game differently from how I play the game, but I don't think I have the right call them a bad player in such a multifaceted game like FFxiv.

    This.

People who just do whatever they want without regard to mechanics or respect for other players they are with, and refuse to learn or communicate.

I like to differenciate between "bads" and "unskilled/inexperienced". The latter I'm more than willing to work with to help them improve. The former get on the blacklist and depending on the extent of their behavior, reported.

Can´t delete it even if I wanted to, sorry ;D (looked) - it might not even reach 10 pages and just die in the quick sand.

Wasn´t starting this with any bad intentions, thought it might actually help to get rid of some of the performing anxiety.

After the fourth wipe at the same boss because of my stupid mistake I usually bid my good-bye, I do feel bad about it but I´d rather get more information on what I´m doing wrong than run the boss again and again with a silently enduring group.

Communication in this game can be sorely lacking I noticed. Hey, most players don´t do those mistakes on purpose - they just don´t know better at this moment of time. The only bad player to me is a non-talking and probably trolling one.

-Has no pattern recognition skills (Keeps dying after standing in the red, completely fails to realize there is a connection.)

-No capacity or willingness to learn

-Refuses to read their tool tips

-Refuses to take responsibility for their own failures, instead blaming everyone else for wipes that they themselves cause

-Demands carries, and gets upset when refused

-Skips cutscenes in MSQ when there is a first timer (nowadays no longer possible without cheating)

-Engages in sabotage, screwing other players over for the lulz, AKA trolling

-Uses "You don't pay my sub" as an excuse

-Resorts to insults and threats when not getting their way

-Complaining that "The game is too hard!!!111!!11!" after wiping on a Guildhest or MSQ solo instance fight

Any of these things will make you a bad player in my eyes, and some of them also make you a bad person in general.

Surprising amount of honest answers so far compared to the "there are no bad players!" you see sometimes. I think anyone who goes into content with other people without wanting to put effort in is not a good player imo. Like I get that some people play this for the story and that's fine, it's an FF game. But at least press buttons. The basic rotations are really really simple.

    Bad players are bad players

But the worst are the ones who don't adapt at all to the team or completly neglect the basics of their job (even thought their job quests tell them they need to use this skill or another) or the ones who want so bad to rush over things they do all the party wipe skipping mechanics.

But I don't blame mistakes so far. I do some too.
