So do the portals just work like an instance gate? Run up and bam!, youre in. Or do they put you into a queue by interacting with them?

This is right on the money. When you develop any kind of multiplayer game, you need to know how to direct your community. This can be as simple as providing rewards to incentivize people to run old content (see: the daily roulettes), but it also covers the application and use of systems meant to discourage abuse and promote teamplay. Honestly, Square Enix should have seen these BA problems coming from a mile away. You lock a limited number of portals to a super-hard piece of content that will only be cleared with pre-made groups, fill it with enticing rewards, and then drop it smack dab in the middle of another piece of content (Eureka Hydatos) that is comparatively more pug-friendly and casual-friendly, and then fail to add any systems to discourage abusing said limited number of portals, and you've got a recipe for disaster.
They updated the TOS the moment they realized what BA was going to do to the community in NA/EU.
This pretty much it. A few days ago i was in an instance with no raid group in sight and after killing ufo a few people want to go in. I was thinking why the hell not, I can always use more fragment. I think we got a little more than 16 people. i went with Owain side and by the time we got to Owain the other side wiped before they even get to Art. Majority of the people in Eureka are not ready for the difficulty spike known as BA. Beginner like those will piss a lot of people off when doing AV as it can easily wipe the raid if you do not know what you are doing. But I agree snipper only happen when a raid group is in. What sniper don't understand is that there are no free loot just for joining and healer are not going to waste a possible sac on you,
It's more that they knew what people were like so they updated the TOS to try and encourage players to get along for the content.
This hasnt been succesful as a deterant by the looks of it.
Ah. I had forgotten about those. >< My mistake. Although wasn't Chrysalis a patch Trail? Have we gotten any Patch Trials that were MSQ focused in a while or just the dungeons?
Chrysalis was in base 2.5 while Steps of Faith was in 2.55. But aside from that, yeah, I don't think we have. We don't tend to have 2 trials in any major patch in general nowadays let alone MSQ ones, ever since HW it's been one trial per all of a main patch.
there's having carrots and then there's being waaay to generous with rewards. a balance has to be struck somewhere. and it's usually on the conservative side of things.
We've had one MSQ trial per expansion cycle since Heavensward launched: Nidhogg in 3.3, and Tsukuyomi in 4.3. The Hildibrand trials and the exception of 2.5/2.55 having one trial each are the main reasons there seemed to be more trials per patch in ARR, as otherwise it was one trial per patch as well, just integrated into the MSQ rather than relegated to a sidequest like the Warring Triad and the Auspices (I'm also not counting EX trials separately). Technically, you could also count the Relic trials from 2.16, but they're effectively glorified dungeon bosses. I also seem to remember Yoshida mentioning at some point that they didn't want to lock trials behind the Hildibrand sidequests again, though I can't remember where or why, so don't quote me on that.
Yeap, this is it. Weren't the relic chimera and hydra just open world bosses at first that were turned into trials since they were almost impossible to complete the original way? That's the impression I've gotten anyway, I never made it to 50 at 2.0 launch. I wonder how they're going to implement the Yojimbo trial from the fanfest if it's not part of Hildibrand, Yojimbo is a key part of the Stormblood Hildibrand story and I can't really see them not tie the trial into that considering Yojimbo's position in it. I mean they could just randomly throw him into Orbonne in the place of that living armor trash miniboss but you'd think they'd have learned their lesson from the Proto-Ultima backlash. We've had one MSQ trial per expansion cycle since Heavensward launched: Nidhogg in 3.3, and Tsukuyomi in 4.3. I think all of this is hilarious. This type of content would have done fine in any other MMO but here is the result of a game that shaped a community of people used to being rewarded by carries, catch up mechanics and bad play. Throw in the zero accountably the fully instanced duty system has created and it should be little surprise to anyone this is the result.
