I agree that I wish there was more class customization. It's crazy to come from western MMOs where the hero is a two-handed sword DPS type, and Square-Enix can't be arsed to give us the basic hero class. There's a reason why Ret Paladins and DPS warriors were insanely popular in Warcraft. The FFXIV paladin is 1/3rd of WoW's paladin. It can only tank. It can't heal or DPS. I like a lot of things about FFXIV, but the idea that I can never play my favorite 'fantasy' themed class bothers me greatly. In every game I play--I try to be a two-handed sword DPS class. Heck, I'm mad I can't use a two-handed sword in Assassin's Creed Odyssey, but at least I can run around with a two-handed axe or two-handed hammer and tear things up. Dragoon being cool and all is absolutely not the same thing as a two-handed sword DPS class.

I also agree that race customization is ridiculously limited in FFXIV. The choices really are humans, or humans with animal ears. Warcraft may get a lot of flak for their graphical choices, but they've always been exceptionally amazing at race diversity. Playing as a Tauren, or an undead, or a space goat is something most games rarely ever touch on. But hey, at least FFXIV is better than Star Wars: The Old Republic. Where you could have aliens from light-years apart that LOOK EXACTLY THE SAME if you're wearing a helmet.

There is class customization. But it comes in the form of changing jobs whenever the heck you want.
If you want to to play someone with spear skills you level up your lancer/dragoon "tree".
Like to tank? Start branching that gladiator "tree"

Look at it from a characters point of view and not the individual jobs.
You have your trees you can just max out every branch, so to speak. That's the joy of single character MMOs.

As someone who is replaying the story to create a new "main" of sorts on JP (I didn't want to transfer), here's my view.

Frankly, ARR is boring. It was boring the first time, but more boring the second time. However, it's still actually better than the beginning of most MMO stories out there. The issue is mainly how long it is. As a working adult playing a few hours a night, it has taken me two weeks to get to the end of ARR. And that's knowing the efficient ways to go about it.

Even so, I remember on my first play through, while I didn't think it was spectacular, it wasn't enough to make me quit. I was just disappointed that it didn't live up to the FF brand storytelling I was hoping for. I wasn't fully expecting it to be FF standard storytelling as an MMO, but I had hoped. Therefore, I was glad when the story really took off in Heavensward. This time around, it was a real slog though.

I think ARR's status as an introduction to how we get famous is important. It's annoying when you're playing a character that is magically a hero from Day 1. But I do hope the news about them streamlining ARR is true. Some of the errand quests do have some importance to helping the player come to understand the qualities of each region of Eorzea, but I think they could mostly tie those into content unlock quests somehow, so that it's a side quest that people can explore without being gated, but which they eventually need to explore to unlock content. I wouldn't be opposed to them cutting down quests and then just leaving ~5 level gaps in MSQ progression. It's not unprecedented anyways, since the MSQ level req jumps from 47 to 49 for no apparent reason before the final two quest chains (Operation Archon). Just let us do some of the more critical errands to prep for Ifrit, defeat him, then make the next MSQ progress from Lv. 30 or so and cut out the excessive errands in between. A great example of something to ditch would be getting the ingredients for the feast to get Whiskaet to tell you how to get to Titan. You defeated Ifrit single-handedly. Can't he just call all the Company of Heroes members to Costa del Sol and they give you ONE test to see if you're worthy?

I feel like you glossed over what I said. I said I want a two-handed greatsword DPS class like traditional western fastasy stories. That's why Ret paladin was popular. Saying "oh, just go dragoon" just comes off as ignorant.

But the good guy slaying the evil os not a DPS, it's a tank.
It's the person who is the thoughest and overcomes the hurdels mostly of physical and psychic endurance.
High endurance is an attribute mostly describing tanks and not DPS.

What traditional stories would that be? While two-handed swords certainly do feature in some stories, they are not very common - just like they weren't common historically.

Ret went through periods of being laughed at, being mundane and being op. When it was popular it was because it was op and because it's a melee that can self heal pretty well. Not because it could use two-handed swords. Literally never heard of anyone choosing to play ret because it can use two-handed swords. But I did hear of a lot of people playing warrior because they could wield two two-handed weapons.

Also you gotta accept this is a different game. It would be boring if every game had the same classes over and over again.

It's just funny looking at this forum, people progressively asking for things that ruined WoW. What, ARR content is 'outdated' so players should be teleported to 4.0 automatically? Why this constant rush to the so called endgame? Let's just delete every area from the game except for the Limsa aetherite plaza. I mean, just to think that someone who plays and mmo would say ''ugh I have to level and progress my character, ugh screw this I'm quitting'' is just mind boggling to me.

And from everything else the OP has said, it is obvious the people in question want to play this game like it's a Sims game and dress up and have 0 appreciation of any other content in the game. And for people who want lvl 60/70 classes, slog through the game like the rest of us. I personally don't think that the dev team should cater to these players. I mean, if they want to skip from level 1 to afking in Limsa in 10 minutes, they can buy the skip.

Honestly, if you apply yourself a DRK can out-DPS most pug DPS classes.
