Retainer Gearing

Hey, I tried googling this but could not find a relevant answer. I understand that retainers bring back better items based on there gear, so is there a significant advantage to gearing them with gensis/ omega gear? basically ilvl 390/ 400 stuff. Or would I be just wasting my tomes on them. Thanks

Doing 390/400 gear at this point for your retainer would really only buy you time before you'd have to re-gear them in ShB as they level toward 80. You can actually get away with normal mode Alphascape gear or normal quality crafted gear, either would be 380. That would last your combat retainer to lv71, in theory.

You don't even need that high. As long as you don't get the message "with better gear, your retainer could bring back rarer items" when you send them on a quick venture, they're all good.

It'd probably be a waste. Quick ventures are outdated and only bring back HW items at best, which you don't need 380 for.

I'm pretty sure that 300 is the top ilvl that "matters" for retainers, unless I missed an update. Putting them in better gear will get you further in ShB, yes, but for now it's useless.

And yes, they'll only bring back HW gear - but they'll also bring back stuff like nidhogg scales & jet black dye which can still be hundreds of thousands of gil if not millions, and I'm pretty sure I get the "rare" comment for those, which means it wants the higher ilvl.

When we are getting Draconian potions and grade V materia and being told they are rare, something needs some major updating or pruning. It wouldn't hurt for them to remove some things from the loot table. If they are geared in HW gear, they should bring HW drops. If they are geared in SB gear, they should bring SB drops. Or at least have a better chance of getting items from those expansions. Certain drops like Jute and rare dyes which have been available since ARR are still fine, but we don't need to be given fish. If the retainer was a FSH then I could see it, but otherwise not really. Being given someone's roof is amusing though, I won't lie.
