Cover's range makes sense as is to be honest.

For the most part, you'll be wanting to use it on a MT. In part due to its range and in part due to the fact that going to run over to one of your other party members means if you're the MT then you've just turned the boss into your whole party and messed up mDPS's positioning as well as potentially just slamming your rDPS/Healers with cleave attacks...

Outside of this, if someone is in danger, they should be aware that running AWAY from the Tank is the least beneficial tactic. Be it them getting hit by an add that just spawned or they ripped aggro from by being stupid with burst Enmity onto the wrong target, or them being targeted by a mechanic that will deal damage to them. Not only for Cover, but also for Shake It Off and TBN (Clemency, Intervention and Passage of Arms too)

PLD is already a really strong support tank. Cover is very cheesy, as you get away with many abusive ways of dealing with mechanics.

You can cover a DPS/healer for many "first or second in enmity list" mechanics whereas you don't need to bother with aggro. i.e. Deltascape V4 Savage, let a healer get earthshaker mark and cover; first healer mark in UwU Garuda, so party and/or healer don't take any damage; Alphascape V4 Savage cover MT or "2nd in enmity - DPS" completely ignoring the intercept mechanic. But the list would go on and on. You save aggro management, and healing resources while handling mechanics in very abusive and cheesy ways.

In addition, the ability itself provides 20% additional mitigation since Stormblood. As a tank, PLD is already tough enough to withstand most mechanic damage, DPS and healers would otherwise die to. This ability is rightout broken.

Increasing its range would just make it overpowered, providing even more opportunities to cheese mechanics. Its short range limits the amount of possible cheeses. - And while I do enjoy a good cheese (play) it already makes PLD somewhat... mandatory.
