    PC servers and PS3 Servers

i will begin by saying that i do not hope to stop the server merge by voicing my displeasure at the idea, given that it seems SE has decided to go ahead with it.

Though there are other topics on the merge already, i am directing this one in particular to an issue that the topic title points out.

We will be merged into fewer high(er) population servers,
however, should the PS3 release be even remotely successful,
new servers will need to be made in accommodation to the influx of players.

With the few PC servers being well populated, the majority of new players will fill their own new servers that have no old players whatsoever (unless transfers are allowed to them by old players which would terribly disrupt the balance).

    The bottom line is simple.
We are heading towards PC servers and PS3 servers (though PC servers might have a small PS3 population ... an issue of its own kind).

    I personally think it's a terrible idea,
    but i could be wrong.

    Discuss.

This didn't happen in FFXI. And we had US release, PS2, Xbox, then EU influxes.

If I recall they stated that PS3 players will have creation priority over reopened servers at launch, but aside that there's really no problem with everyone playing on the same servers. In FFXI we had the 2002 release, then Americans got installed onto the same servers in 2003 with the PC release, then later the NA PS2 release, then came the EU PC/PS2 release on the same servers and later the 360 NA/EU/JP release on the same servers.

It actually boosts overall populations, segregating everyone would be the worst thing they could do actually in terms of the platforms.

IIRC, there will be new servers at the PS3 launch, allowing new starters to choose between a fresh server or an established server.

Along with the PS3 release, there is also the PC relaunch. So while I'm sure the relaunch will attract more PS3 users over PC the servers will find their own balance.

Server merges can also work in reverse. Once a world becomes over crowded SE can give the option for server migration sending higher level characters to new servers (after a few months)

Nothing is stopping a PC player from creating a new character at 2.0 and jumping on a new server
I think new players at 2.0 should have the option on starting on a fresh server
As bad as launch was, it was cool seeing everyone at R1

One thing i gotta point out when it comes to joining an old server vs a new server when this all comes around

ALOT of players will join pre existing servers purely so they dont have to deal with the "no one has any crafts leveled so we have no damn gear out there to use yet" issue.

One of the BIGGEST things that slowed people down at launch(if you dont count the way exp was calculated back then and fatigue) was the sheer lack of items in the game until crafters got their levels up high enough.

If they actually listened to us instead of trying to drive the playerbase away, I'd consider this a valid concern.

EDIT: Sorry, thought I was still on the FFXI board.

While I agree with you here, I really don't think this is going to be a problem with the new gear vendors and the crafting revamps no longer requiring you to have 3 30+ crafts to make a level 3 item.

itl still be an issue when there are no materials yet on the server and people want tons of gil for them that people do not yet have

granted there are those who want to deal with this, but there will be plenty who wont
