This sounds so strange to me. I've never had to play XIV with the disc in on PS4 and I've had SB installed since the day it was released. It installed off of the disc once and that was it.

Not sure on that. Their support FAQ just says that if you have the physical version of ARR you have to use the disc. But it doesn't say if upgrading to the digital collector's edition of ARR will cause you to not need the disc. It does say that if you have the digital version of ARR or the All in One pack you wont need the disc... so. I'm not sure if there is a way or not. Maybe they could make a "Disc Install" option in the future that let's you no longer need the disc.

Well, that's ARR. They could have fixed that with Stormblood for all we know. When I got the SB expansion, it came with the disc, it installed from the disc...and haven't needed to use it ever since then. ARR and HW were both digitally downloaded for me. SB was the only thing that I had a physical copy of.

Installing the disc didn't unlock the full version though - I had to put the code that came with the disc into PS Store to register it. When I did that, I noticed that it seemed to have given me a digital link to download the game - so I took out the disc, deleted the disc data, and was able to download the digital version of the game.

It's never required me to use the disc again, because I'm not actually playing the disc version. Either way it only gives you the base program, and you still have to download all the patches.

I think I got the link by typing in the code again, but it probably should have gone into the game library as well.

TL;DR: even if you haven't directly purchased a digital copy, you might still have one available to you.
This is EXACTLY what happened to me, trial, physical collectors, deleted data, used code to download digital.
I still need to use the disk.

Did you take out the disc before downloading it though? No idea if it actually made a difference, but I did that to be extra-sure it would install the right version and not draw any information from the disc.

Also, to be sure, you said "physical collectors" edition. Is it a three-in-one complete game (that's what I have) or a Stormblood expansion collectors' edition? Perhaps the data and/or permissions are different.

I checked the program information (Settings > Storage > System Storage > Applications) - I have version 7.50 and the file size is 34.87 GB. Is that the same for you?

The 3 in 1 collectors edition.
But the disc may have been in there when downloading...
