    PS4 Disc

So. I have a physical copy of ARR, HW, and SB and have to have the disc in the system to play FFXIV. If I upgrade to the digital collector's edition, or preorder the digital version of Shadowbringers, will I no longer require the disc to run the game? Or would I need to buy a digital version of ARR somehow?

You'll still be able to play the game no matter what you buy for the PS4, but chances are you'll still need to use the disc you already have to play it.

I had an issue like this when installed it, I played the free trial just fine eithout any disc, then bought a physical complete edition.
Upon loading the disc it ended up forcing me, for some reason, to delete all of the trial data, then redownload the game digitally, but I can't run the game unless the disc is in the console.

You can delete the game, redownload the trial client, and login and it will let you play without the disk.

I've tried this once or twice I think. It never seems to work for me.

This. The key thing is you need at least one of the expansions as a digital purchase. I have physical ARR, digital HW, physical SB (don't ask me why, wallet was drunk). Deleted the game, downloaded the 'trial' from PSN, waited a day for download because Aus internet, logged in and have been without a disc since.

I haven't digitally purchased any part of it, just the physical disc, unless the free trial counts (programming-wise) as a $0.00 purchase.

When I first installed I didn't need a disk, but upon changing HDDs due to a crash it always wants the disk. I'm not sure how to fix it either besides hoping that 5.0 instal fixes it.

Thing is I want the physical for my collection.

Have a look in the "game library" where you can re-download digital games you've purchased.

Putting the disc in the console does prompt it to install from (and always require) the disc, but when putting the registration code into the PS Store, it also gives you a digital download link.

I'd already deleted the trial and installed the disc, so I don't know if I could have saved a lot of re-downloading by never installing the disc version.

Having installed the digital version now, I never need the disc.

I've never bought a digital version of ARR, trial or otherwise. I've tried this a few times but each time I try there is not download option. It takes me to a purchase screen but says out of stock. Or at least the last time I tried this it did that.

I should have clarified: I downloaded the digital free trial originally, then bought a physical 'complete edition'.

When I first inserted the disc, it prompted me to delete the digital version, so I did that. Installing the disc didn't unlock the full version though - I had to put the code that came with the disc into PS Store to register it. When I did that, I noticed that it seemed to have given me a digital link to download the game - so I took out the disc, deleted the disc data, and was able to download the digital version of the game.

It's never required me to use the disc again, because I'm not actually playing the disc version. Either way it only gives you the base program, and you still have to download all the patches.

I think I got the link by typing in the code again, but it probably should have gone into the game library as well.

TL;DR: even if you haven't directly purchased a digital copy, you might still have one available to you.
