It is a reason. But it's not a good reason, go replace that crap. Unless it's accessories, which do not have new versions yet. Once 1.21 is out though, there'll be new accessories so you'll have no reason to use dated anything.

Best reason to wear dated gear is for spiritbond, then convert it to materia once you get current gear.

i would say if you are a low level player than go cheap dated gear, as you will be out growing it in no time.

...except dated gear tends to be more complicated to make. One would expect it to generally be more expensive as a result, is this not the case?
Luckily, dear OP, SE seen the mistake of the original design and why every new set and new recipes are a bit more "obvious" and makes a bit more sense (e.g favors DoW/M/etc.)

Dated recipes are getting removed in 1.22 I believe. So after that it's only a matter of time until all the dated gears get either materia'd or vendored.
I'm sure there will be some people who keep some items though, like for example the pink coatees (since you can't make pink anymore). In 2.0 though you'll be able to dye gears pretty much any color you can think of, so by then there won't really be a need for it anymore.
There is still a lot of dated gear available, especially for lower level stuff. In some cases, there are none of the newer gears available in certain level ranges, so you either have to use new gear far below your level, or a piece of dated gear.

Technically they don't ever have to remove the recipes for the dated items them selfs. they have already made it impossible to create the components for them. It is already nigh impossible to make some dated stuff. it wont be much longer until it is all impossible to create.
