Hm that still needs some context since Surito becomes overtly concerned that we would turn into tonberries after coming in contact with the source of the disease. Lore wise we do know how faeries originated. They were initially familiars used as messengers between ships. It was only after their ability to heal was discovered that the practice of Nymian arcanima changed into a healer's position. Even the marauders in one of the previous questlines questioned whether or not the Faeries were tied to tonberries. Since they're literally the source of our healing I doubt they would also be the real source of the disease.
