I just don't get all of this vehement aggression towards it.

It's because they locked the relic behind it. Take the relic out of it and put something specific to Eureka in there, and there wouldn't have been the amount of venom that there is. As long as they kept the ilvl equal to or under relic anyway. BiS gear locked exclusively behind content like Eureka would never go over well.

This. Locking something like that (And other stuff like emotes and hairstyles) behind it for me just feels like they're trying to force and manipulate players into having to go there whether they want to or not. Want this Expansion's Relic? Well, tough luck, you're going to have to spend hours upon hours locked in this content that is totally different to everything else in the game, whether you like it or not.
