I think what Yoshi p said about adding a separate race in a past interview does hold some weight. I think it's likely we will get a lion-esque, male gender locked race. Especially since the leaker has been mostly accurate. Hmm....

It's more likely they'll "break" the lore to have male Viera rather than break the entirety of the start of ARR to have a playable beast tribe race.
I'm not buying that we're getting Ronso.

I'm up for bestial anything, but I have a problem with a lion-esque race. Lions are felines, different genus, but still cats. You know what's also a feline race? Miqo'te.
Fill your (as in SE's boots) with going for a bestial race if Viera are genderlocked (I still hope not), but if it is a leonine race, it should have been something else.
Also with a leonine race, I'm going to be honest, and say I actually thought Moombas first.
But if they were a new Beast Tribe??? OMG I WOULD DIE THEY'RE TOO ADORABLE.
Now back to topic. >_>
Of course; I still think it would be extremely shoddy writing if they weren't in game however due to the very nature of Male Viera and their wood. How would they go around the fact the only few males that are around live in that specific wood? I already made an earlier post regarding their number based on a population of three million people being in Ivalice, with 5% Viera population with 8:2 female to male ratio + 75% of the males being culled due to strict lifestyle and that was STILL 7500. That's a big number for a race that will be concentrated in that very wood, who shoot trespassers on sight because outsiders in their wood is like a heinous crime.
How would we, the WoL and our party manage to get through the wood without being attacked by one? And yes they attack from the shadows, but this is the WoL/WoD they're not going to go down with one shot which will end up with a confrontation.
Not to mention their wood - which Yoshi P mentioned - was burning in the trailer. Another reason for them to come out and fight or help with the blaze. It honestly just doesn't make sense to me at the minimal for there not to be a male viera NPC.
I just can't wrap my head around it.
'Oh yeah, all the males are in this wood and shoot outsiders on sight. But you the WoL/WoD won't see any of them during this epic battle between you and the Empire while in the woodland. You'll just have to deal with flavour text that tells you they're doing something - maybe have some bodies randomly show up with arrows in them or something - yeah, yeah - let's do that. Can't show any 'awkward' Bunnymen.'
10/10 shoddy writing.

If they want to make a lion race they can just give miqo'te some manes, or even introduce a new sub miqo'te race with mane, maybe more threateningI'm up for bestial anything, but I have a problem with a lion-esque race. I think there's some middle ground between "hulking beast virtually unrelated in design to the females" and "little teeny chibi boye" where a good design lies. While I can imagine them being smaller than the females in height, to be the same size as elezen - not child elezen, I can't imagine them being 'cute' nor dainty looking. Specifically, because Yoshida really dislikes the idea of them being cute. He wanted them to be more beast and fierce looking. Otherwise, if they're 'cute' I think his words were along the lines that they'd just look like miqote but with bunny ears and not a tail.
I don't know. All I'm 100 percent of is that he's really against the idea of the males being anything that could be considered 'adorable' and 'cute' looking - at least without the creator of the toon going out of their way to specifically make them look like that through nice arduous work with the character creator. Meaning that 'cute' wouldn't exactly be the primary look for the face, and skinny and small would be the extremes of the slider.
A part of the lore that could be relevant is that Viera do leave the woods to live amongst the Humes, but by doing so they become outcasts and lose the ability to communicate with the Jungle, their senses are dimmed (to our level?). One considers this is not written as only females do this. It could be quite inclusive of males.
It would also fix up the lore around the Viera so that player-characters don't have a lore advantage over the other races while in the jungle.
Outcast doesn't need to mean shunned/exiled. It could be restricted to just dimming the normal Viera senses that would allow communication with the forest other races don't have.
I really hope there are male viera, but I don't think I will change from Miqo'te.
やはり、お前は……笑顔が……イイ
THIS is something I can also get on board with. Give the already existing feline race more lion features people seem to be so thirsty for! I would LOVE to give Cat Daddy an epic mane. At least for a time.
Regarding the lore and of course having their ability to hear the wood etc. Wouldn't the WoL/WoD be able to understand the green word and 'hear' the wood through the use of the echo? Or did I completely forgot how the echo works in regards to an understanding over languages including spiritual ones? But yes... wouldn't they be able to communicate with the wood regardless of race? That'd be pretty cool...
I just.
I just want tol aurin T^T
But you know, instead of chipper and insufferable, stoic and etheral.
Their dimorphism was so cool
