Gender locked race?

I think SE are gradually moving away from the whole 'beastmen not allowed in city' lore thing, since they've had a Lupin in Gridania and those two Mamool Ja in Ul'dah if you unlock BLU. Either that, or it's only the Eorzea beastmen that aren't allowed in the city states.

Besides, if we're gonna ignore male Viera lore just so they can be playable, but then say beastmen can't be playable because of lore reason... double standards, much?

Nah I don't care either way to be honest, I'm just saying from a lore perspective it'd be a bigger shift than adding in male viera, not that it would be a worse or better than the other. Honestly I'd rather they just add in the lupin as playable race rather than a big cat race from nowhere. Seeing as I feel it'd be more interesting anyway, since feasibly we'd just be getting bigger and furrier miqo'te. I'd rather a wholely separate animal race.

But that'd go against FFXIV tradition! Every new playable race must be something that hasn't been seen at all until the very last patch of an expansion!
For real, I hate that SE have done this twice, now. Thrice if Hrothgar are gonna be a new race. They have all this lore for existing races (one of which has been conscripted by the anti-beastmen empire), yet instead they decide to make the new playable race something that didn't exist until 4.5... and it's so boring in design (worse than Au Ra, to be honest. Au Ra at least have weird skin condition, eye glow things, horns for ears and a tail. Viera just have rabbit ears. Unsure if foot gear has been redesigned at all for them outside of RSE).

I've said as much before, though I'd happily play a Highlander if they could be designed to have real eyebrows and a broader range of facial features. I played one for a while and enjoyed how he looked in armour, though eventually went back to Midlander since the dreaded 'same face' became a little too much to bear. I don't doubt that if more customisation options were added across the board then we'd see a spike in popularity for the lesser played races.

It doesn't help that a lot of hairstyles and casual glamour options just don't fit many of the playable races particularly well. An unfortunate consequence of some very vocal players pushing for everything to be 'unisex' even though 'unisex' is often code for 'feminine' and 'androgynous' aesthetics.

So you also have a situation where a lot of stuff looks decent on a Midlander but a lot weirder on a Roegadyn or Xaela.

I don't think that's the result of players being vocal though, that's the result of SE not wanting to design separate armor sets for males and females. It is especially apparent with the AST lvl 60 JSE. That's like literally a dress they've got guys wearing. You can barely call it robes. Thankfully SE has realized this to an extent and made the JSE armor distinct where necessary. Like, the lvl 70 WHM and AST armor actually has a different design on guys. You get pants and lose the pantyhose (thank god).

I am fairly certain that we will never get anything really beasty. The lore is one thing, but more so the work they would have to put in for the gear. The demand is way to low for that amount of work :/ BUT i talk about beasty like...wild-tribe-beasty. I thing a humanoid, kinda more beastly race would be possible. Maybe with a more...beast like face? Maybe they would have to lock the option for showing helmets but i think that would not be that much of a problem. I think a Forum-user called Shougun posted nice examples from the game bless online. How a beasty race *could* look like...without straying too far away from the Humanoid formula. And I think they are still quite pleasant to look at That will always be an important factor in my opinion. I think the crowd that would enjoy ugly-beasty races would be to small in ff14. I guess there will always be the need to some degree of attractiveness or pleasant appeal.

The other thing to keep in mind is that WoW is still a western MMO. FFXIV is still an eastern MMO at the end of the day. I can't imagine them designing a race that their primary audience isn't going to like very much just to try and attract these "WoW refugees" to the game. I mean, are they that hard up for money? :v

Yet I hear from this thread that they wouldn't not add male Viera because of all the fantasia money! Keep in mind they're also splitting the data centers which helps leave comfortable room for more new players that are potential long term customers, and more players is very VERY important for an MMO.

Also I hear a lot of people say that they don't want male Viera not added due to Hrothgar; however, we do not know which one was made first. That means that Hrothgar possibly didn't get a female variant because they decided to add female Viera instead.

Does it really matter which one was made first if the end result is the same? We could get Burmecian males and female Viera and people would still be upset at the inability to play as the missing counterpart. It's the nature of unnecessary gender locks.

Because it shows it isn't about races being gendered lock, it shows that people just want male Viera. If people don't want gender-lock (This is what the thread is about) some people would advocate for both as most people are. However, there are some people thinking that it is Viera being screwed over for a possible "ugly" race when it could be the completely the opposite way and are taking it personally towards people who would prefer something else. Like how apparently I'm a toxic bara cat lover, and this is a Viera thread and to keep normal speculation away that could rain on the parade. (We have show your Viera and the main support for Viera thread if the people don't want opposite opinions on the subject).

I don't only read these forums about FFXIV, I do others, but it is this stuff that makes me unpleasant.

Now this person was replying to a troll. There is other threads with similar kind of stuff towards anyone who would prefer something more masculine. It is ridiculous. Now, this thread has gotten a lot better so it isn't to much of an issue, but I want people to keep in mind that Viera males may have not been screwed over by Hrothgar and it could have been the other way around. Hopefully people keep the civility so I don't have to take this as personally as well.

This thread is about unwanted genderlocks and Viera. Two separate races are bound to get pushback regardless of which 2 we get, regardless of which order the 2 were conceptualized because Viera have been requested since the original desired racial poll from eons ago and male Viera have been requested since the concept art was shown in the HW press tour.

As I've said earlier in this thread, this new race has gotten no lore, no hints, no hype. To anyone who hasn't been following the leaks, this new race will come out of left field. The Devs have set themselves up for people seeing this new race as the unasked/unwanted alternative to male Viera by keeping them in the dark till the last Fanfest.
