They already found a way to bend the lore for gameplay. Hell, they've bent the lore numerous times for the same of gameplay. It's already pretty well known that the lore team takes a back seat when necessary. So while I get your point, I don't see why this would be the hill they want to die on when they've caved on similar issues in the past.
As a follow up, they also create the lore, so it's their choice to make them a race with a "rare gender". Even if they were that way previously in other games, they've had no problems coming out to say that the Ivalice, Dalmasca, etc. of XIV are not the same ones of Tactics and 12. They could have easily tweaked the lore to make it more balanced, especially since they've already done the "m/f live separately" schtick with miqo'te.
