Gender locked race?

I always wear a tiara or something on my paladin so my horns aren't clipped by some helmet.

Yeah, I never wear a helmet, lmao. I can't stand how out of place the horns are just... poking out. Usually I do sunglasses, a circlet, or the curved horns I use now. Though the horns look clashing as hell in that lodestone picture... It's much less gross looking in-game, I promise. <_<;

Even without clipping issues coming into it, I think circlets look nicer than wearing helmets anyway. They're a good option to at least look a little bit defensive without covering up your character's face and hair. (Plus it's all just illusion anyway, right? I'm still really wearing a sensible helmet that'll protect my head, you just can't see it...)

On a side note, I don't think Fran's outfit is going to be the Viera race gear. They probably haven't finished designing and making it yet. So they gave their current models the Fran outfit so they had something on for the reveal, since it already exists in the game.

I'm pretty sure they said during the Viera reveal segment that they've made that outfit the standard racial gear now.

Obviously they're going to recycle designs where they can, but it would be nice for it to be at least somewhat varied. It doesn't match the style of the other races' starter gear.

Unless it's their version of the Hempen underwear set, but I'm sure that's unlikely.

We gotta drop this idea with ronso stuff really.

With the addition of Ivalice and the Viera, let alone the NieR raid, I think we're beyond being able to claim that adding a race from a different FF game won't happen because it'll hurt FFXIV's lore.


(Count me among those objecting to NieR, at least as a basic prospect. I know we've had crossovers before, and people have wanted a NieR one, but they were low-key "do it if you want to" seasonal events that probably don't count as canon. This is an entire raid story, a permanent part of FFXIV's lore, based on another game that isn't even part of the Final Fantasy series.)

Well that ship probably has sailed if this is the last race we're getting. The only bestial option we could get is the upcoming males.

Let me rephrase: What possible reason would they have to create the lore that male Viera are incredibly few in number and never leave the forest, while they're simultaneously working on creating Viera as a playable race?

The case with Mi'qote is a perfect example. They created the lore that males were few in number and never went out as a justification to not make them playable. It was only much later that they had to adjust the lore in order to make male Mi'qote adventurers make sense. So for male Viera, why would they create lore they know that they'll instantly have to change?

That all depends on how you look into it I suppose. I look at that lore and see a possibility. The dramaturge, states that the Green Word that Viera follow actually gives them means to seek aid from outsiders and possibly leave the wood if it also means that by doing so they are protecting the wood and the Viera. He also speaks in past tense hinting that things have changed in present years; a throwback to FF12 and tactics and how now things are very much different. If not, then oof, our female Viera is going to get some very rude responses when they return to the wood.

If one of the playable areas is going to be the very homeland of the Viera. Where Lore has it that the males shoot on sight, attack outsiders etc - would it be good storytelling to have your WoL a possible outsider and other outsiders just to stroll in? Or for the males that are guardians and protectors of the wood to not engage both the imperial invasion and more so; the cause of the fire - that was started by Yoshida to be in that area.

While they certainly can ignore the fact the males exist. Why then hype up the fact that males are wardens of the forest, killers who swoop down and dish out cold punishment regardless of your purpose of being there? And instead just have it 'Oh, even though all of this stuff is happening which certainly would cause male Viera to stir and congregate to form a resistance. I know it's the one thing that would possibly cause a male Viera to pop out and say hi, but nope.' What are they going to do, how would they go about even doing that? Just state 'Oh, our males are fighting them' and that's it? I can't imagine any writer worth their salt doing this.

Most likely, Viera will be female-only and the male-only race will be Ronso. I really hope this isn't the case. But something tells me we're going to be disappointed.

As neat as it would be to see the ronso being a player character race.. i doubt it ever would be. SQE has avoided making anything but humans with slight variations (like a tail, or horns, or bunny ears) for every race they've done so far; honestly, the most unique race in terms of character model we have so far is the Lalafels.
I just don't see them adding the Ronso on the basis of history alone; maybe i'm wrong, but i feel i'm realistic.

As for the Male Viera thing.. I think Yoshida is just being a dick, as this is what he said in an interview from Paris.

Q: The question everyone got the most excited for at yesterday's press Q&A was the male vieras. Since it's you, Yoshida, we think there'll be male vieras. But in FFXII, male vieras are extremely rare and never appear. How are you going to introduce them into FFXIV?

A: Who knows? I'm a contrarian, so when you say "Yoshida would definitely do this", it makes me not want to answer *laughs* Actually, in the Return to Ivalice story that concluded the other day, there's a ton of lore about vieras in FFXIV. We coordinated with Matsuno-san to include most of the hints there, so please check that. Matsuno-san wrote wonderful texts for us.

So someone in this thread said that the leaker was asked about his icon and I couldn't help but want to find the quote out of curiosity.

"So I asked Blu about extra info and he said to look at his profile pic, It had a Rabbit and a Lion on it. Now the Rabbit is obvious as Viera and I asked if the Lion was something like Ronso since it's the only Lion like race I could think of other than Miqo'te all his said was I was pretty close. The leaker didn't outright state Ronso, but he did outright state Viera in his posts.

This is the picture he used. And lets be honest, the person who asked Blu about the lion came up with Ronso because its the only race he had in mind. We dont know any other race in the FF series beside the Ronso that are lion alike to fit this animal.

I interpret it as the Dramaturge has no idea what big shakeup is going to happen between now and 5.0 that causes us to travel to Dalmasca or become the WoD. Despite the game existing for the most part inside a time bubble theres a few points where logically X happens before Y. Logically we met Fran and became aware of her branch of the resistance and the dramaturge tells us what we know so far about Viera pre 5.0 in the same vein that logically the lv 30-50 DRG quests take place before Heavensward.

The devs have all but spelled it out that we're going to be able to visit Viera settlements at some point in the expansion, but if the guys are as trigger happy as the current lore says they are, we shouldn't be able to do so. I think something big is going to happen between 4.56 and 5.0 that'll give some wiggle room for both us to play as Viera and for us to make it to bunnyville.

The fact that Yoshi didn't wear or say any hints towards "lions" on day 2 leads me to believe that we're not getting a 2nd race. We're 50ish days out from the final fanfest with zero nods in-game or out of game to Ronso being a part of the expac.

I was worried until day 2 of the event. No Ronso hints + Yoshi being cheeky about Viera all but sealed it for me. What they’ll look like is anyones guess since the only physical descriptions we can use to try to imagine them are “some are pale and some are not”, “they’re fierce warriors”, and “puberty makes them obviously different from the girls in some manner” + blufever's lion avatar, but Im pretty confident we're getting them now now ^^

Yeah I apologize if when saying Ronso I confuse people but it's the best lion like race to refence that SE has done themselves. Rev also works (if you add more hair) but I just keep thinking "I hope not" lol.



I wouldn't gamble that SE calls it Ronso but I think something visually "like that" is possible. I say Ronso because it paints a clear final fantasy picture, not because I think Ronso verbatim will be added. It also has some relations to Viera, like those clawed feet. The lion rabbit for example could appear very Ronso ("ff lion") like and checks a lot of boxes.


It could be the person was mistaken and the lion race isn't a playable race but with the high accuracy they have had I have a hard time believing that there won't be something lion like coming into the game.

Exactly. It's one of the reasons the Au Ra were disappointing to me on release - tough, feral looking men, but the women were small dainty miqote-except-lizard. I would love to see the reverse sometime. Let women look tough and spiky and feral, for once.
