i think hrothgar will add some variety to players, that being said it's still a niche race, and will be played by only a few people. viera will be very popular though.
it's a very cheap thing to do, because at the end it's just about them being unconfortable with the idea of male bunnies or female savage cats, since it's much more work to create 2 new genderlocked races with lore and story on their own, instead of 1 single race with both genders as it should be expected.

Well done SE, seems that Shadowbringers might be the expansion where I will stop playing the game. Have supported you for quite some years but this is just going to far. After Eureka, Bluemage, now dancer being a DD and this..

I really wanted an awesome female beast race..yet again females will only get another cute/sexy race. While those that wanted Viera men will also lose.

I think I will only sub until the expansion to keep my mansion but if nothing great is happening in that expansion that will overshadow these horrible decisions than goodbye...but even if its great then I will probably just play with each new patch...no reason to give you more money than that.

I created this account on this forum only to voice my utter disappointment in the gender locked news of Viera and Hrothgar.

I did not expect Hrothgar to come along but I am happy for it, however, gender locking them or Viera that so many waited was the stupidest idea I've ever heard. Some might argue that it is an good idea because.. looking at male bunnies would be disturbing because reasons? To those I would like to say, have you considered watching almost naked women characters running around the game might not disgust someone? And to those who might argue that it worked in FF11 I would like to say that I think many male miqo'te and female roegadyn players are quite happy with the unlocked genders, myself included. "But Viera was only female in FF12". That's weak argument. It was stated then that there ARE male vieras but they are just living the rouge life. In FF10 has plenty of female ronsos there so there is no excuse locking that up but they can't just make one locked race as it would be a cry of sexism right away, thought I would like to cry that right now anyway. I've been disappointed with gender locked clothing and hair styles to this day but that has not been enough for me to bother to write here. But I can't ignore a whole race being locked.

I've been male miqo'te since I started this game back in early 2016 and subbed ever since and never once had I considered changing my race, not until I heard about the viera that was. I never waited for new content as much as I did for this race. I find myself let down and quite honestly pushed away to a point I have considered canceling my pre-order and just quit playing. "It's just a race". Yes, yes it is just a race but it is also equally wisy-washy argument as "It's just a game." I've paid for each game and expansion that pre-order price as well as that monthly sub feed. I've bought stuff from the mooglestation and had multiple retainers open for who knows how long. I've paid so much money (even during the Rauban-block auring early access when the game was unplayable) and spend so much time, talked my friends into to joining as well, that it's not "just a game". It has been part of my social life as much as some school for 3+years. It's just one race out of all the new content, sure. I got bored most of the time thought. I don't enjoy doing the hardest content like newest EX primals/Savage raids (mostly because of toxic players...), I'm casual gamer and I personally enjoy stuff like glamour, roleplaying aspect and crafting. A race to me is more important than a new job or a new dungeon. And that is why I am so disappointed that it hurts in an emotional level.

Still, I don't feel entitled to tell Square Enix what to do but I hope they understand that some players, a lot of them in fact, are not happy and some don't want to support a game that wants to block them from having fun. Fun being the point of the whole idea of gaming.

Whether I quit over this or not depends on do I find anything worth while doing anymore now that I have nothing to wait for in the future.

I should like to voice my opinion on the matter, because this decision made me cancel my subscription just now.
I am extremely disappointed from the decision to gender lock the races. I was looking foreword on to playing male Viera, because i like how the race looks. If i chose to play i have to play as a female.... SE claims to stand for doing things the right way, making everyone happy (by putting new polices and stuff) and yet forcing you to do something you don't want to. And before someone says "No one is forcing you to do anything", they are forcing not all but some of us by giving us no choice. When you take the ability of someone to chose you are forcing them to do something.
SE seems to follow a ongoing trend from all other gaming companies, why do things the right way when we can make something and then waste time on fixing it.
As a main healer who has no interest on playing anything else the news of dancer being dps was crushing enough, but to add to it that i cant change my race to what i want is too much.
And to those of you who a are unable to see the logic behind my words here is why....
To me whenever something becomes repetitive i change my race and move to one of the other healers. This way it feels like i am playing the game in a new and fun way. And yes i do play female characters but only because again i am forced to do so. Females have a lot more outfits after all....and yes... playing dress up might not be the main point of a game, but creating an illusion and having fun is.
Fun for one is not fun for another but eliminating the fun for some isn't fun at all.

I admit me unsubscribing might be an extreme move, but that's how i feel at the moment.

In it the say Hrothgar will come in male and female, though my guess is that is just misinformation. But one can hope... right?

I like helping people with their Job ideas, it's fun to help them visuallize and create the job they'd like to play most. Plus I make my own too, I'll post them eventually.

I'm disappointed about no male Viera because it would have been unique to have. They had some good concept art so I'm shocked they didn't just run with it.

I've only just started to post on the forums; lurked in this thread for a long time, just observing the back and forth. I'd like to say a couple things here for which I may get a lot of flack. But I'd like my voice heard, so here goes:

If folks have seen the keynotes and live letters, and their hype has continued to increase for the expansion, that is awesome. I had a ton of hype for the expansion - was even considering going back to tanking following Gunbreaker. I haven't been particularly thrilled with Stormblood - neither the story, environments, nor the content has resonated, and development has felt anemic.

The initial reveal of ShB and the first few zones really excited me because it felt like a return to form. So I can get that people are pumped. Your excitement and eagerness to play the expac is totally valid.

But many people, as this thread shows, have also had their hype crushed for Shadowbringers - some are blindingly furious, others are disappointed. Others still may be lurking, and maybe they're going to stick around, or maybe they'll quietly leave the forum and game without a word. Those feelings are valid too, even if we might not feel the same.

I can only offer my perspective. Genderlocking comes on the tail of a series of design and direction decisions that I personally find objectionable. This is just a sampling of my biggest issues:
    • A growing sense that the devs no longer care about community feedback - a trait that earned them a lot of praise in ARR
    • I've disliked Eureka from minute one
    • BLU was the job I wanted to main, and that came out 'Limited,' and community protest went ignored
    • The content being released per patch cycle has been reduced (to allow for things like Eureka), despite increased budget
    • Viera is genderlocked, as is Hrothgar, again despite community protest. On principle I can't get behind genderlocking.

It might just be me, but it feels like stuff is missing from Shadowbringers. There's still time for more stuff to be teased, but for the moment I am planning on sitting out the expansion and I plan to let my sub end.

Basically, I am not satisfied with the product for which I have been paying - I don't think I'm entitled to one thing or another, but the fact remains that a lot of good will I've had for this game and SE has eroded, and I am no longer satisfied.

The only way I know to make my dissatisfaction heard is with my wallet, as I would with any other product or service with which I am no longer satisfied. There are other games on which I can spend my time and money, so I'll do that. No big deal for me, and I know SE won't miss me, random customer No. 12345678.

Again, if you're hyped for Shadowbringers, that's great! I hope you enjoy the expansion, and I hope I will be back to enjoy Eorzean journeys with you.

Yup, and to those people saying there's not much competition in the MMO market, it doesn't even need to be an MMO. They compete for a slice of your time over a whole range of activities, the biggest substitute for which is other games.
