There was very little about the bunny outfit being unlocked to males that merited hope. Between how long it took, it being played as a joke, and the passive aggressive "worn by: EVERYONE" instead of just removing the gender lock indication from the items...
They were backed into it, they were very unhappy about it, the main reason given why it took them so long was because of how uncomfortable it made their male developers.
You'd think they wouldn't mind as much when needing to design a race that's basically Au Ra with a bit more muscle and long Miqo'te ears, but we might just be proved wrong this weekend.

My hope was more on the fact if they thought 'Male Viera' was weird, just like a 'Male bunny outfit' was weird; that hopefully they got over that crap - or the female's developers were more than happy to pick up the task. So, more 'learned your lesson' and 'get over that fragility' type of deal.

It's also possible that the decision to add Hrothgar was made before the decision to add Viera.

I'm hoping so; the viera didn't even look complete - even with just the females - if Hrothgar was added after then I'd be questioning a lot. Though that brings forward the whole, why didn't they have a 'Hrothgar' be in the place of 'Fran' or was it to hype the whole - 'she's been here before' and 'Without a Viera they'd kill you for entering that place' since Fran noted that they were being watched by the wood wardens during the 24man.

There's some support to that if you go by the Hrothgar 'bug' in the French version, as the order of races listed there went: ARR races, Au Ra, Hrothgar first, and only then Viera.

It could be that they were planning Hrothgar for a very long time but since Viera became a hot topic with the Ivalice raids their announcement got pushed ahead to build hype. That'd explain why the Viera seemed unfinished in the trailer they showed.

we'll know by the end of this week one way or another though XD

I would not rely on this too much, because both were implemented during that 4.55 patch. It could basically be alphabetical order between those two.

SE is slowly adjusting FFXIV to the mood of modern eras but the vocal playerbase makes it hard to do because whatever they attempt to add it's often followed by a backlash.
    Eureka is a good example...

(the bunny outfit thingy irks me a little. All I see is that the gender equality was just a pretext to get this particular outfit, but that's just me).

Yoshi is unconfortable with male Viera, they are apaprently not "bara" enough to him. Which is from what I've heard the reason he doesn't want to include them and instead create a whole new race he can model as he wishes.
People see FF has a (gosh this sounds so weird but) genderfluid brand. So they assume that FFXIV must follow this trend. Legit.
    Yet Yoshi doesn't have to.
FFXIV is not some Visual Kei/Malice Mizer themed fun park from what I know, not all NPC wear loli dresses nor makeup.

    Also..

    Viera are females.
The lore acknowledge a few males, sure, but in the end they have always been females in most people's mind.
I don't understand why it's such a shock they apppear to be genderlocked.
The Vieras are part of the FFXII, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift..
In all theses games they have always been female only (the male being absents or non depicted).

The Races from FFXIV were created for MMOs (based on FF11 ones). They don't appear in other FF so them being tempered with is no real biggie I suppose.
Vieras are imported from an other video game, sure their lore may have been altered but still
They went with the exact FF12 design and if back then they didn't include the males so there are no obvious reasons that'd force SE to do it now.
If they had their own version of the Viera it would appear to me more illogic not having males.
I know, male Vieras in FF12 don't have any official design but that's because they didn't want them to take part in the story (I guess?)

I'm not fan of gender locked races but I do understand the logic behind it.

(Sorry I sound like an asshole).

I get what you're saying here, but I don't really see it as a justification for keeping the race genderlocked. In FF 11, the Mithra were female only with the males only ever mentioned in rare NPC text. We went nearly the entire life of the game without even seeing a male Mithra till WoTG happened, and even then we just get to meet one. They still didn't make them playable. FF XIV went out of the way to reverse that even though it went against the design philosophy of the Mithra race in 11. I don't see why they would allow male miqote to be playable and then try to use that same excuse to justify male Viera not being playable.

And for its worth, I don't see how bunnyboys are any worse than catboys. :v Aren't catgirls associated with pervy stuff in japan too?
