Gender locked race?

It would actually make a lot of sense for the men to be more intimidating than the women, though. They live in solitude and are described as being far more territorial than their female counterparts. They've also - as of yet - been spotted leaving the forest and entering cities. Which suggests to me that they're a lot less civilised in the first place.

I think the way the lore has been presented in FFXIV may give the impression that the females are not cutthroat or fierce, but in XII they are. My point is that in the trailer the female viera shown are presented much softer than have been in the past (no claws, softer brows, their feet may or may not be less beast-like but we can't tell until that racial gear comes off). We are holding the males to a different standard if we can only accept them to look fierce when that fierceness wasn't really translated into the XIV model for female Viera. XIV has a poor track record when it comes to races representing lore as well but I feel that's been discussed to death in this thread.

I mean, the concept art men looked pretty fierce and big too, though. Not sure what you're wanting, from the start of your post it sounds like you wanted softer men instead of the usual. Unless you mean you wanted the little boy viera concept art. Which nah no thanks, already playing a lala lol.

No I'm not talking about the little boy viera lmao. I'm having a difficult time putting words to my thoughts right now and explaining any better than I already have. :/ I think I'll have to come back later and try to reword what I mean a little better.

I imagine they made the destiny's child of Viera for that trailer only. We already have Fran as a model of less "sexy" more "fierce" Viera, so I hope we can make ours look similar to Fran.

Also tangentially related I was looking at Viera models in XII and thought the wood-warder NPC model was really interesting (and she has different tail ornament that kinda looks like an actual one). Just wanted to share lol

Oh, gods, that was my first MMO and it always irked me how every other race had the choice between male and female and whatever class they wanted (granted, there were only two jobs per race), yet the beastmen were: hulking furry with animal head or cute girly girl with large boobs and animal ears/tail, and only men could be tanks while women were the beastmaster caster class... Gah, don't mean to rant, it's just highly annoying <.<

That said, I wouldn't be opposed to male viera being larger or more muscular than the females, nor being shorter and slender. While I have my preferences to how I'd like mine to look, I'd still play them anyway.

As long as they're fairly muscular and handsome, I'll be content. I just don't want them to be small and cute just to balance out the aesthetics embraced for Raen and Xaela. It's already awkward enough playing a Midlander and finding my character to be the tallest in an eight man group on a fairly frequent basis.

I'm a huge fan of FFXII. It's one of my favourite games. It's a shame, then, that a lot of people who requested Viera didn't seem to actually want them because they wanted to play fierce protectors of the forest. They just wanted 'hot bunny women'. So I'm not at all surprised that the portrayal in FFXIV is very different to how they were in FFXII. They were always designed to be attractive, but the sex appeal was mitigated by how haughty and dignified they were. That was the case for both those living the wood and those like Fran who chose to leave and live amidst the other races.

I'm hoping that the Viera introduction video isn't reflective of how they'll be portrayed in FFXIV.

There is still people now who are confused to why Fran doesn't have a tail. I also saw a lot of comments about how small her boobs were. It's really depressing that Viera are being shoved into this "fetish fuel" box when they were a genuinely awesome race of people.

Fran and the other viera that were showcased at the fanfest basically wear lingerie. It's not surprising that many are treating them like fan service at best, rather than a race in their own right. The lack of male presence from their race so far doesn't help either.

I honestly find that skimpy outfit off-putting. I don't mind having skimpy outfits in the game but SE showed us five viera altogether and they all look like they're from a brothel. At least one in moderately normal adventurer gear would have been nice.

They were treating them like fetish fuel long, long before the teaser trailer. My point was that a bunch of people asking for Viera never looked a Viera apparently as 80% of them thought that Viera were female only, had tails, and were busty when that was never the case.

I really want them to be implemented just as they were in FFXII (beautiful women who were still stoic, intelligent warriors), but for some reason they showcased the race running in flower fields and giggling like maidens. As Theodric said, I hope that they get more mature and calm animations and aren't waifu'd just because the dev team has a thing for tiny anime girls. I also wanted them to go all out and give them the long arms and necks just to make people ree into the sun, but that's just me and my Elezen talking.

I’m still disappointed that they didn’t give them their own unique starting gear and just slapped Fran’s armor on there. I love Fran but it’s kinda lame and feels lazy.

I've said before that Fran is one of my two favorite Final Fantasy characters and I still think it's silly that all Viera wear her clothes. If anything, the racial gear should have been Wood Warden armour.

The seond biggest thing that bothered me about that teaser (the first being the absence of males, of course ) was how this race of aloof, almost feral warriors suddenly because lingerie models with an added giggle at the end...
