Gender locked race?

If they do gender lock Viera, there will be a backlash of some kind. While its not going to make FFXIV buckle, I do think it will leave a bit of a dent in the game. Gender locked races are, from what Ive ever observed in MMOs, not all that popular a concept with very specific exceptions. I think if they genderlocked Viera, people would be upset enough over it, and you might see a dent in FFXIV sales or subs over it. Again, it wont breka the game, but itll be somethign note worthy where people will say "Hey remember when they gender locked Viera? Yeah, that was stupid."

Broadly, it appears people do want male Viera.

Now Im still under the belief they will introduce them. Theres a sizable player base demand for them, FFXIV isnt beholden to the lore of other FFs so there is no real lore reason not too, YoshiP Im pretty sure has stated hes not a fan of gender locked races himself, the reveal would be a big deal so theres a reason to withhold them, and (this is more speculative) game companies are more likely to tread carefully in regards to their players bases lately due to all the big upsets in the industry as of late. The safer bet would be not having gender locked races, because its reasonable to assume that more people would flip it over Viera being female only vs those who would say "Gawsh, the Lore of older FF games only had female Viera!"

Also now that I think about hrothgar, they might be a dead race. That is, this was somethign they were planning on implementing and possibly canceled on relatively recently due to other limitations or time. We may not get a race beyond Viera, but old code was put into place regarding it.

Surely they don't ignore threads as big as this one? Maybe after the continuous onslaught of requests for male Viera they got the message that the majority of people are against gender locked races and have been working with that in mind as they built the Hrothgar and Viera.

Also, although we don't really know how the leakers got their info...if they were just playing the game or translating the text of npcs-wouldn't they have come to the conclusion the races were gender locked since, as we have seen with male Moonkeepers, the other genders don't have a large role? If they were playing the game, according to the last fanfest the player models even for female Viera aren't done so I doubt they could actually change into either race, and maybe interacted with placeholders until those get eventually replaced. With nothing else to go off and with text clues in their dialogue reaffirming the way their societies work, I can see why they would read this and think the races are gender locked.

This is all just my speculation though. I have no idea how they actually test the game or do translations before it gets released, but it just has me wondering...

See, if they were part of the translation team; that the info that Blufever was leaking could indeed be tied into this information we have here. This could explain why he updated his information with the new race while before he only said Viera.

The only question I have is that if he was part of the translation team or doing the code, etc. Then he would have seen the name of the race and telling us that name wouldn't have hurt him. Instead, all he knew was that they were lions.

Weird one really, why was Hrothgar before Viera? That's the one that doesn't make sense. A throwback from Stormblood or HW maybe? Why were they made before Viera?

The only reason this makes me frown is that if they were made at the same time then Viera should be the one getting the most attention, not Hrothgar which would have been the 'male' only race. And as people argue, most folk in this game tend to play female more than male. So, wouldn't the female only race get more attention and be created first?

This brings up the idea that Yoshida wasn't even going to bother making the dude Viera and went straight for the 'lion race' gender lock.

I personally think Male Viera will be a playable race. But on the chance that they are not, even if they add a second Male only race, I have to say I think it would be a massive mistake.

Viera has been asked about and talked about for years, I remember the idea being floated around in the early days of ARR and throughout it all, it was discussed as both male and female options. I think theres a genuine desire for both genders. I don't think a gender locked race has any place in a modern MMO. Especially given the female Viera's design choice. Though i think that there is no way they could add Viera without including homage to its original source. Personally, not adding male Viera in my opinion would have an overt negative effect on XIV. Not only because it would cause a lot of disappointment in the community, but because it gives an impression that as far as im concerned should be buried.

Yes there is the chance that they could a male only race for balance, but this is the worst case scenario. We have lore on the Viera that could excuse the males being... absent, but with another race, how could that be explained? The only reasonable race that i could accept as Gender-locked are something like the sylphs, because they are completely indistinguishable and in that case, what would be the point? You just wouldn't denote a gender at all.

Essentially, if there are gender locked races added, in whichever format, for me it would be the biggest mistake Yoshi P and the devs have ever made with FFXIV. That said, I don't think they are unaware of the rift it would cause, so I can't see them being so foolish as to gender Lock Viera. In the end though, the JP fan fest will reveal it, for good or ill.

Explaining the inner workings of the gay subcultures is not the main focus of this thread...to summarize things let's just say that people tend to go for people who look like them, though there are chasers that chase the other gay subcultures. They're all based of body types and tend to be really superficial, which is kinda sad but that's just how it works. Bears tend to only like bears because at some point or another they have trauma from being rejected by a skinnier guy. This makes them either hate them or constantly pine on them. Then skinnier guys who have body image and/or daddy issues makes them either chase bears or be grossed out by them.

~Anyways I have a question, is it allowed for people to share pictures of how some players have modded their characters to look like male Viera? I saw some on tumblr that looked amazing but I don't know if that is ok to share them on these forums.

Anyways, if it wasn't said already, the reference to the appearance of Hrothgar in the GLA quest wasn't in there until after December. It was pointed out by a user called Awaterujin on reddit when someone was curious about when the race was added to the files.
