Wired controller button swapped

I play on a Windows 10 PC and I picked up a wired generic controller to play with as I lost my genuine PS4 controller in a move. The problem is, with this new controller, pressing the X button maps to triangle, triangle maps to circle, and circle maps to X. The internet is unhelpful and I've had this happen with two different controllers, so it's unlikely to be a simple hardware error. TIA.

On the system config menu there is a setting for button types on controllers "Gamepad Type". There are a few different button layouts supported. Maybe changing it will convince the system to do the right thing.

I was going to suggest the same but then remembered those are, by their description, only cosmetic. Ie the UI shows either icons for the PS symbols, or the coloured letter circles common on Xbox controllers.

What kind of controller are you using? Does this exhibit the same issue in other games?

Have you calibrated the controller either inside or outside of the game?

That may be true - my gamepad isn't shown in my UI. I am also referring to the selection above the selection for Gamepad type on the system configuration screen. There is also a selection for which device is the gamepad. A few weeks ago I was messing around with USB devices that entry got (somehow) reset on my system. It was referring to the wrong device and my gamepad didn't work in ffxiv but worked everywhere else. Its quick to check.
