On the contrary - since they wizened up and stopped restricting cross-class (to a point where skills like "Rescue" were left on the bench by anyone who was not intentionally out to troll), people have had plenty of situations/opportunities to use it. Methinks you'd be surprised how many buttons actually get pressed less than rescue does.
Let's see - most recent 5hr session as WHM & AST last night:
-- First boss in Monastery - always some people who just can't tell where the safe-spots are during the bombs & golems. Can give one a helping hand.
-- A DPS vs TGCid didn't know what to expect during the ice-phase and was stuck on his own in the empty circle on full health watching us DPS-check on the opposite side. Gave him the "GET OVER HERE" Scorpion treatment and rescued the git right through the ice - much faster (less damage taken).
-- Tanks who tank'n'spank the 1st boss in the Arboretum and don't pre-emptively move when plant-food arrives. Rescue the git right to it so I don't have to watch them making a failed dash for the tiny safe-zone when boss starts casting arena-wide bad-breath (aint nobody got time for esuna, got stones to throw over here).
-- Alphascape 2.0 - still quite a few people doing this seemingly for the first time. Was an infinite number of moments where I could have pulled someone out of a mechanic they were unsure of (in/out circles, pull people away from the line Midgar is going to dive-bomb, pull that random lazy-ass full-HP DPS into stack-marker etc etc).
-- Alphascape 3.0 - always gonna be that one person who doesn't know their Star/Larboard. If you want to be a total ass, you can pull someone you hate through the fatal circle (thing where the DPS check spawns) and insta-gib them.
-- The Burn - Spot dragon and notice a DPS still doing their crazy lap on the other side of the arena and about to eat a face full of frost? Rescue the sod.
-- Skalla - always that one sprout who doesn't notice Pull/Push mechanic of first boss, or doesn't move out of tail/claw swipes of third boss.
-- See that player who's about to eat a full knock-back mechanic off the platform in the likes of Alpha1/4, Delta4 etc? Rescue to the... Rescue?
The list goes on and on and on and on.
Rescue can be situationally handy provided the caster is pre-emptive. There's been an infinite number of times where I get to watch in slow-motion (for anything between 3-6 seconds) of some diabolical DF random about to meet their maker while I sit there looking at my Rescue cooldown and saying a quiet prayer for the soon-to-be-departed. While a lot of said situations aren't typically fatal (unless target is already banged up), I'd much rather prevent that damage with a quick instant-cast than have to add yet another Cure-cast because Joe Soap is about to chow down on unnecessary mechanic-damage. Bonus points if it's saving someone who's just unfamiliar with certain mechanics. If people are intentionally eating them, I like to let them suffer.
