Hey that thousand gil adds up, especially if you do gathering and crafting.
I ran around like crazy to get all of crafters and gatherers to the current level cap in SB, my tickets probably saved me a mil on that alone.

It can be rough when starting out, but don't worry. Most people learn to manage their gil in a way where they acquire more than they spend, and it gradually builds up on its own so long as you don't go crazy with major purchases. It just takes a little while to unlock enough content to get to that point. Until you do establish an equilibrium with the game's economy, I would reduce teleporting as much as possible.
First and foremost, set your home point to the aetheryte you visit the most. I am not sure if you have access to Kugane yet, but once you do you need to make a decision about if it will be Eorzea or Othard that you will spend most of your time at, and set your HP to one of those aetherytes. If you have/get a residence, this decision is easy.
Being frugal with your teleports is advised as well. As an example take care of all the things you need to in one zone/continent before porting over to the next. Airship travel will also open up as you progress the MSQ, which also helps to reduce port costs. Utilize a chocobo/falcon porter, ferry, airship etc. if you can before porting. Bloodporting is also an option if your return is on cooldown.
One thing I know for sure is I didn't make my first million being reckless with teleport costs, and I still don't to this day and usually only port if my destination cannot be reached from my current location in a single load screen.

You can get through the entire story without having to stop and earn gil. Just sell all of the junk you get. Pick up side quests that offer gear. The MSQ gil rewards will end up paying for all of your teleporting needs. Basically the gil in this game is mainly for indulging in any side content (crafting, housing, etc.). There are multiple ways to earn battle gear that doesn't involve gil at all. But I think the devs did a pretty good job of making sure you have plenty of gil to carry you through the story. Side quests can always give you a little more.
I used to be an adventurer, but then my ping increased.

They did cap the teleportation cost at 999 gil. I DO however think that all hub areas like Rhalgr's Reach, Idyllshire, and all Towns like Gridania and Limsa Laminsa should get the half off price your favorites get.
Or, with the world rapidly expanding with each... expansion... maybe we should get more favourite slots.
One per expansion would be ideal.

Don't forget the Saucer have its teleport price halved and if you make it a favorite it goes to be your gateway from SB to ARR zones.

The teleport system really needs to be readdressed as the continue to expand the geography of the game 999 cap is nice but even that adds up when they do these MSQ quests that have you popping back and forth all day between Limsa and Doma.
I’m more in favor of a system that asks how long it’s been since your last teleport instead of distance traveled to determine price. Also the removal of Return as a spell with the tradeoff being you can teleport for free by interacting with a large aethercyte.
Except Return is necessary in some instances, such as Haukke Manor, and it solved the recent glitch in Orbonne Monastery. The teleport system really needs to be readdressed as the continue to expand the geography of the game 999 cap is nice but even that adds up when they do these MSQ quests that have you popping back and forth all day between Limsa and Doma.

Return is not necessary in Haukke. The door on the back of the first boss room opens precisely to be shortcut on the run back. Is it convenient to use there, yes. But in no way necessary.
If you say 'pls' because it's shorter than 'please', I say 'no' because it's shorter than 'yes'.

Additionally, there's nothing saying that they don't add crystal ball or something, like what you see in Haukke Hard Mode, after defeating the second boss that interacting with it returns you to the entrance. But yes, you don't have to use Return in Haukke, and it actually saves you only a few seconds (I know as I've gone through Haukke in a party with Return on cooldown. I had used it before popping in)
