Solo content in an MMO is neither unheard of nor entirely without merit.
I mean, technically, one of the most prominent features of FFXIV is its MSQ, which is predominantly a solo activity, with only the occasional duty here and there to get you to mix with others (Which, often, actually detracts from the experience, especially if you're a newer player so all the "Old" MSQ duties are just steamrolled by level-sync'd characters farming for roulettes...)
Even the Masked Carnivale, in concept, isn't out of place in an MMO (It's implementation is a bit shoddy though... I know a lot of people like it, but to me it felt kind of lame. Especially when one of the main draws was "Using different skills to prey on the different weaknesses of enemies" then the actuality of like 80% of the enemies in the place have no weaknesses or are only weak to Wind which is a damage type available on literally just 1 Primal skill and nothing else. So, much of it was just Glower spam... Or Moonflute>Bristle>Off-Guard>Final Sting because just one-shotting the act was far more entertaining than actually bothering to try and Glower spam the thing down...)
The issue mostly arises when they try and put too much into the solo play category.
Like, having occasional bits of side-content, such as Gold Saucer or Masked Carnivale or MSQ is fine. You spend a bit of time doing it every now and then while you're waiting for something else or while it's 4am and no-one else is online.
Trying to put major content, such as an entirely new class, as solo content just won't work. Especially if you half-ass actually making it solo content so it has just this weird dichotomy where it's sort of solo content because it's just a pile of ass to try and party up as well as locked out of a lot of party content (Be it by level limiting, or by the "BLU can't access this" BS), but then you also NEED to party up to achieve anything with it.
