Blue Mage in XIV has nothing to do with Blue Mage in XI other than its three-letter abbreviation. The AF is from V, the origin is...original, and the abilities are from classic games in the series like V and not the same as they worked in XI.

This is true of a lot of things; people assume that something in XIV that was also in XI is a direct reference, when most of the time they’re reference to classic FF’s like V or Tactics. Particularly when it comes to things like job design. Obviously they can’t do this for jobs that work differently from their older counterparts (e.g Bard, Astrologian, Dark Knight to an extent). So when they do get a chance to do it, it makes sense they’d go all the way with the references and callbacks
