It's really obvious that while Eureka and Blue Mage are not like FFXI (by virtue of being shallow imitations) they're an attempt to pander to FFXI nostalgia in ways that don't really work with FFXIV's core gameplay systems. Blue Mage having a massive spell list from which to pick and choose, rather than a cohesive and properly designed skillset, is very obviously an attempt to bring back that feeling of customization FFXI BLU had (even though most of Blue Mage's spells here are worthless filler), even when Blue Mage was never build-your-own-job in any other Final Fantasy game. This dev team clearly cannot execute FFXI concepts in this game without them being extremely divisive due to either not really understanding why some people still like XI or simply because the core gameplay of both games doesn't align at all.
